C'est avec consternation que j.ai appris aujourd'hui.hui que mon ami Gilles nous a quittés il y plus d.un an. J.ai perdu un ami et un exemple, il n' y a pas de mots pour dire ma tristesse. Accepte, chère Malvina, toute ma sympathie et mon amitié.

I mentioned Dr. Klopman to my wife last night. I told her about the talk he gave to me in a gentle but serious tone about doing better in terms of grades for my courses. He showed mercy to me and for that I am forever grateful. I just found out today from reading the "The Case Chemist" that he passed away earlier this  year.

Dr. Klopman was a model researcher and educator.  He demanded excellence in his students.  I am truly blessed and honored to have had the privilege of studying under his able tutelage and guidance.

My time at Case working for Dr. Klopman were some of my most memorable and fulfilling years. Being a part of KGroup was truly special.  I also cherish our extracurricular activities such as the International Dinners at the Pink Pig and tennis matches at The Village in Beachwood.

Our family feels a deep personal loss.  Thank you so much for all the guidance, caring, and support you and Mrs. Klopman have given me and my family through all these years.  You were always like a father to me.  You will forever remain in our hearts.

You and Gilles have been friends with my parents since before I was born and I have very fond memories of you throughout my childhood. I remember Gilles and my father having animated discussions about issues at the university and their current academic interests. I can hear Gilles' laugh after he told a joke. My thoughts are with your family at this difficult time.

I am deeply saddened to learn that Gilles Klopman has passed away. I have known him for 27 years and have cherished his leadership and insights in computational chemistry, informatics, and toxicology. He was instrumental in getting me involved these sciences and trying to use his software for federal regulatory applications. It was a very rocky road at the beginning, and I remember his software crashing the entire Vax computer system at the FDA facility in the Parklawn Building. I also remember him as a great story teller and always surprised me with his great wit, charm and jokes. He seemed to have a joke for every possible situation. In one meeting, Gilles told me about his brief and early career in the Belgian Army. He convinced his supervisors he knew why people who were working in the firing range were getting sick. This episode resulted in Gilles publishing a paper on the detection of lead in blood samples of soldiers working in firing ranges. What a wonderful way to serve and avoid carrying a rifle. I also recall how his stories about nearly being drafted in the Vietnam War. But most of all I remember him recalling how he conceived the first version of the CASE software on an airplane flight. He envisioned the entire basis of the program in a single dream-like inspiration, and he wrote all of the computer code (Fortran) when the plane landed. I also cherish his retirement celebration at Case Western Reserve University attended by an auditorium full of his formal students. It was quite impressive to learn how many different disciplines he had helped sponsor. At the celebration he said he and his wife were going to celebrate and take a prolonged safari in Africa. My thoughts and prayers are with you Gilles and your family.

We all learned and benefited so much from knowing  Gilles Klopman. Gilles had so many wonderful qualities including  his love of science,  his leadership, vision and most of all his love and devotion to his wonderful wife, Malvina. He changed the lives of those he touched.He stood for the very best for Case Western, its research, students and reputation. His passing leaves an emptiness in all of those who knew and loved him.

I will always remember your education in my first seven years in US. You taught me to treat research happily and always find fun during work. Now I am teaching this to my students.
