I had the privilege of knowing Dr. Balin as a dear friend of my mom. We all thought very highly of her. She was a wonderful woman.

Dear Joyce and Paulette and families,
Your dear mother was a wonderfully kind, remarkably capable person. She was my mother's best friend for so many years, having bonded as young, pioneering female physicians who cared passionately for some of the most vulnerable children in Cleveland. Your mother became my friend, too, offering regular updates on your families' accomplishments, of which she was justifiably proud, and showing great compassion with regular phone calls -- and even a long-distance visit -- during my mother's lengthy illness. I speak for my mother, too, in saying how grateful we are to have known her.

I rented my first apartment from Mr and Mrs Balin about 20 years ago.  Sad to see Mrs Balin's passing.  She was always so nice.

Dear Paulette and Joyce,

Our families have much in common.  Our parents were: Holocaust survivors (Jeanine and her late husband and our parents Gabriella and Dr Imre Kovacs); 
"trail blazers" (building homes in the frontiers of Timberlake in the 1950s and re-establishing themselves in medical practices in the unfamiliar terrain of Lake County -including spawning Erieside Clinic-Dr. Kovacs); 
education "fanatics" (sharing a carpool for ?10 years from Timberlake to Shaker Heights so that we could attend Laurel School at a time before highways and integration, making us trail blazers in a sense, too!.)
Our mothers were the drivers, literally and figuratively, in their new lives and in all of our lives.

At the time we may not have fully recognized these connections, but my sister and I speak of them.
I am grateful to have had a chance to see Jeanine just last year at a small engagement party we held in Cleveland for our younger daughter ("our" is my husband 
Don; we live in Boston)  
It wasn't easy for your mom to go places, but as you know she doesn't do easy.  She stayed until we had a chance to talk and she could meet my daughters.  Of course,  she spoke effusively about you.
