Born in Indianapolis on May 15, 1936, to Joseph and Clara Bassler (both deceased), Elaine graduated from Indiana University, where she met Barry Miller (deceased). Their union led to the greatest joys of her life—being a mom and later “Gram” to her grandchildren.
Elaine is warmly remembered as a role (and some suggest fashion) model who shared lessons by words and actions. Although her school teaching career was brief, her lessons of integrity, strength, and Jewish faith were ever present—whether during times of great success or deep loss—and will forever inspire those who loved her. “Life is wonderful if you let it be” was Elaine’s mantra, even after a fall at home caused a spinal cord injury limiting the use of her body for the past decade.
Elaine offered compassion and positive thoughts about and for others—whether they had met once, been disconnected for years, or bonded for life. She displayed gratitude always. Her family thanks those who kept her well and close at heart: family, friends, physicians, and caregivers, including Menorah Park (now King David).
Until her last breath, Elaine maintained joy and nourished unconditional love for her family: Andi (Jay) Hyman, Rob (Karen) Miller, and Chuck Miller; grandchildren Alana Hyman, Rachel (Will) Lamb, and Charlie Hyman; step grandchildren Daniel, Joel, and Max Ludin; and her cousins, niece Sydney, and nephew Mark Levy. Elaine was predeceased by her sister, Harriett Levy of Houston, Texas.
Funeral services will be in Cincinnati, OH. In lieu of flowers, consider an act of kindness for someone else, unexpectedly and without explanation. Be like Elaine. Talk to someone you care about…and make meaningful memories together.
