It’s hard to believe it’s been a year already. I saw a pic of Liz and my girls in the kitchen with me during a Chinese dinner prep and smiled at the memory of her joy being there. The recollection made me both happy and sad, and I guess that’s the way it will be. Rest In Peace dear Liz. 

I have been doing Elizabeth’s nails for the last almost 4 years ..my children loved her ,my family really loved her .I loved her dearly she always brought warm smiles and great stories to tell and we would like  to say From Olivia Kennnedy Kj Lauren Taylor and Chelsea that we love you Liz

So very sad to hear such devastating news.. She was such source of light and I feel very privileged to have gotten to know her.  She was such a brilliant and kind person, and I'm an infinitely better person because I knew her. Her memory is truly a blessing. I hope that her wonderful family, and I'm sure they do, know just how many people's lives she made brighter, and more full, just by being herself and sharing her kindness and light everywhere she went.

I met Elisabeth through Esther and Hannah when we were in college, and I will always remember the good times we spent together with her - over fine food,  fine wine, and a whole lot of laughter. I am so sorry for your loss and offer my sincere condolences. 

I used to play with Elisabeth at her Grandma Joan's house when we were kids. She was always fun and bright. We used to run up and down the stairs laughing. We slept in bunk beds talking until we fell asleep. We played hide and seek and with little tikes toys and I even remember playing croquet with her once upon a time. I have few memories with Elisabeth but all were good ones. I remember her happiness and that she was smart. In our later years we shared love for food and wine. ...My heart goes out to the entire Greenfield family. Life is unfair and it is unjust that Elisabeth's life was short. Sending love and light and good energy. 

Dear Ellen, Alec, Zach, and Evan,

No words can express the depth of my sadness at this great tragedy that fell to Elisabeth and to all of you.  I know that her struggle over the past months to return to her healthy, joyous, loving self was your struggle as well, and that the grief at having lost the battle will never entirely disappear.

Although we were all members of CBSCS, I actually met Elisabeth only a few times -- once, memorably, for a marvelously delicious Rosh Hashanah lunch  at your home that was mostly her effort.  When I think of her, aside from her fantastic cooking, I think of her smile and her joyous exuberance.  

Psalm 30, which is part of the daily morning service, says that "tears may linger for the night, but joy comes with the morning."  Nighttime can be a very long time; but there will be, eventually, a morning when your memories of her will bring more joy than tears.   May her memory be a blessing.


Elisabeth, or Liz as I called her, was my best friend, more like a sister. We grew up together and shared many fond memories, my favorite being in the kitchen at the synagogue during the Chinese banquets my father hosted. She was the manager of the kitchen even in high school, always a true leader from a young age. I was her maid of honor at her wedding and although she won't be there in person, she will be my of honor in spirit. I'll always love her and she will always be my best friend.  I'll honor her through cooking and baking. My last memory of us together was during my honeymoon last fall when I visited her on my roadtrip out west to see national parks. I'll always remember it as one of the happiest memories we shared during our everlasting friendship. To friendship! 

Moving to Ohio and working in retail jobs that didn't afford me the luxury of going home for the holidays was rough. I missed a lot of good meals. However, one year in particular I was invited to the Greenfield residence for Thanksgiving. 

Elisabeth's food and hospitality made being so far from home so much easier to deal with for me. I don't think I have a single memory of her when she wasn't smiling or teasing Zach. 

Her Creme Brulee  remains the best I've ever had, even after trying it in Paris.

We are very deeply sorry to hear of Elisabeth's passing.  We will cherish the memories we have of her forever.  Your family is in our thoughts.

I remember growing up with Elisabeth, waitressing in the Chinese Dinner, being in the elementary school plays together, and having fun times in NYC together. She was there for Esther when I lived in Taiwan, making our separation easier for Esther. She truly embodied what a best friend really is and she will be missed. I loved going to her wedding and getting to be a bridesmaid for her. I love you and will miss you, Liz. May your memory be a blessing, my dear Elisabeth. My heart goes out to your family and your true love, Evan.

Hamantaschen ... need I say more? And, oh yes, latkes... I've never had so much fun in the kitchen as I did with Ellen and Elisabeth. Elisabeth was fun - and funny - and kind - and willing to help and opinionated - mostly in a good way - and she was just a wonder and one of the hardest-working people I've known... I will miss you, my sweet!!! Love you

Our deepest condolences,

Through tears, I remember Liz, through her delicious dinners at her parents' home in Syracuse and later Cleveland, her deep friendship with my own daughters, and finally, to her help preparing Congregation Beth Sholom-Chevra Shas' former Chinese banquets and also managing the rambunctious teens who served as wait staff for these massive food fundraisers. Liz, her dad Alec and mom Ellen and I spent a lot of time together in that synagogue kitchen, laughing and kidding and talking about things. Liz's training in the culinary arts allowed pulling off dishes which otherwise would have been far more difficult to do. I'll forever remember her smile, sense of humor, intelligence and being one of the most genuine people I have known.
 
I'm at an utter loss for words to soothe myself or anyone else about Liz's dying so young. But I’m happy I got to know her. Very much so.
 
I'm not a spiritual person. Yet I once read a novel about what happens in the hereafter, and in it, the author posits that spirits of the departed reside in some place just like here until their final destiny. I recall they kind of look down watching their loved ones and interact in ways loved ones can't quite divine but suspect, until everyone who remembers the departed one, has ever been in personal contact with them, family. friends, little kids, teachers, hairdressers, fast food vendor, also pass. And then the author leaves it to the imagination what happens.
 
I rather like that idea, in a novel or not. My own father comes to me in dreams even today. I wonder he interacts with me from wherever his spirit might be through this process. Perhaps considering this might be the case when we dream of Liz, which I assure will happen for many, might offer some solace - if not any explanation for it all.
