EUGENE WEISS, age 80, passed peacefully on January 15, 2015, after a brief illness. Gene, beloved and adored, is survived by his wife, Bobbi (nee Starr) and children, Michael (Patricia) Weiss, Brad Weiss, Scott (Kathy) Weiss and Dana Schultz; his grandchildren, Matt Weiss, Samuel Weiss, Alyssa Weiss, Jake Schultz, Rachael Schultz, Lexi Weiss, Coby Weiss and Alyson Kaplansky; and siblings Earl (Vivian) Weiss and Leonard (Kathy) Weiss; cherished friend of Kathy Roach. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hershel and Celia Weiss and son-in-law, Robert Schultz. Gene was born in Cleveland November 23, 1934. He was a graduate of Shaker Heights High School and The Ohio State University. Gene Weiss’ accomplishments in the sports arena are unprecedented. In 1953 he won the Ohio high school wrestling title and the same year at the age of 18 won a gold medal at the Maccabiah Games Israel. After his senior year, in 1957, Gene won a gold and silver medal for the United States at the Maccabiah Games and in 1961, he was named coach of the United States wrestling team. His proudest moment in his sports career was in 1965 as he was the flag bearer representing the United States Team at the opening day ceremonies of the 7th World Maccabiah Games in Israel. The same year, he was named Ohio Amateur Athletic Union coach of the year. Gene continued to coach with the United States wrestling teams in 1969, 1973 & 1977 and ultimately became the National Wrestling Chairman of the Maccabiah Games. During those years he was a member of the United States Olympic Committee. In 1977, Gene was inducted into the Ohio Wrestling Hall of Fame and in 1980 he was inducted into both the Cleveland Sports Hall of Fame and the Shaker Heights High School Hall of Fame. Gene was personally responsible for starting and running the Ohio School of Wrestling, Ohio’s first wrestling camp where he taught well over 7,00 youths over a 25+ year span. In 1996, Gene was appointed to the Ohio Athletic Commission and became Chairman on 2001. He was known as the father of MMA throughout the state of Ohio. Gene is survived by his wife of 58 years Bobbi and children Michael (Patty), Scott (Kathy), and Dana Schultz. Grandchildren Matt Weiss, Samuel & Alyssa Weiss, Jake and Rachael Schultz, Lexi & Coby Weiss and Alyson Kaplansky. Sibling Earl Weiss (Vivian), Lenny Weiss (Kathy).
