FLORENCE LENORE KHANER, age 97, died February 11, 2014. Florence was born in Dallas, TX before moving to University City, MO where she graduated high school in 1934. Early in her youth Florence displayed artistic talents. She was a ballet dancer at the Fox Theatre in St. Louis, and as an artist had her works displayed at the St Louis Museum of Art. She moved to Cleveland in her early twenties and worked for the Acme Loan Company located in the Cleveland Arcade. Florence became president of the Women’s Auxiliary Division of the Cleveland Retail Stores Association. She later worked for the former Morris Plan Bank. She was a wonderful cook and an excellent baker. People often asked for her baking secrets and cooking recipes which Florence would share, however, she would always leave out certain ingredients to make certain that no one else’s results would taste like hers. Many years later she shared her recipes with her daughter-in-law, Judith and told her to save any of them she liked and discard the rest. Florence revealed there were two versions of many of the recipes; one to actually cook or bake with and the other version was the one to give away! Florence could also show a stubborn side. When her husband tried to bring home a Dalmatian for himself and Dennis, Florence told him to take the dog and leave. He was not to come back until he decided who he preferred to live with – her or the dog! (she was allergic to dogs). When he returned (without the dog) she told him she was glad he came to his senses. They later compromised on a canary.
