June 6, 1935 – November 2025
Fred Amdur was a good and loyal friend, known for his strong work ethic, his resilience, and his generous heart. Born on June 6, 1935, in Piotrkow, Poland, to Simon and Mary Amdur, his childhood was marked by unimaginable loss. At the age of six, he was separated from everyone he knew when his parents were murdered, and he was taken from his home by the Nazis. Alone in the world, Fred survived the ghetto and the Buchenwald concentration camp at a tender age. He was liberated at age ten as one of the Buchenwald boys.
After the war, Fred came to Cleveland, where he lived at Bellefaire and was cared for by people he remained grateful to throughout his life. He attended Heights High School and, with characteristic courage and pride, went on to serve in the United States Marine Corps.
Fred loved watching sports and had a deep appreciation for classical music. He faced life’s hardships with quiet bravery, including the loss of the love of his life, his beloved wife Nora, in 2009. Through every chapter of his life, Fred’s strength, gratitude, and steadfast spirit touched all who knew him.
A graveside service will be held on Thursday, November 20, 2025, at 9:00 AM at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Cemetery 165 Central Ave. Silver Creek, NY.
Arrangements have been under the supervision of Berkowitz-Kumin-Bookatz Memorial Chapel.
