Gerald Goldberg

May 14, 1940 – September 9, 2026

Gerald Goldberg, age 86, of Shaker Heights, Ohio, passed away after a long illness, surrounded by his loving family and incredible caregivers.

Gerald was born on May 14, 1940 to Charlotte and Leo Goldberg. Gerald graduated from Shaker Heights High School, The Ohio State University, and Cleveland State University School of Law. He went on to work as the Assistant Attorney General for the State of Ohio where he took great pride in arguing a case before the Supreme Court of Ohio. He became the managing partner at a Cleveland based law firm, co-founded US Title Agency and then joined his brothers at Ohio Savings Bank/AmTrust Bank ultimately becoming co-chairman of the board. He practiced law for over 50 years. In addition to his professional accomplishments, he was a committed philanthropist contributing to Crohn’s research and Cleveland Clinic Children’s Hospital.

He was blessed with a long and beautiful life. His family meant everything to him where he embodied the notion that blood is thicker than water. He had the opportunity to travel extensively including an infamous around-the-world trip as a young adult that produced stories he repeated forever. He loved country music and animals, especially horses, and was a caregiver for many at his home in addition to decades of horse racing. He also was an artist and saw the world through a unique lens and with a delightfully quirky personality. He took such pride in his exceptional landscape architecture skills, where he built and maintained a property filled with incredible beauty and endless play opportunities for his children and beloved grandchildren.

Gerald is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Nancy Cohen Goldberg; his son, Peter Goldberg; his daughter, Amy Goldberg, and her children, Ben, Eli, and Daniel Schwartz; Karen Katz and her children, Abe and Amelia Katz; Betsy Goldstein (Gregg) and their children, Ian and Bryce Goldstein; his brothers, Robert Goldberg (Linda Weisenberg) and David Goldberg (Brenda); his sisters, Jackie Ponsky (Jeffery) and Bonnie Frankel (Larry); and his sister-in-law, Barbara Greenberg (Michael). He was preceded in death by his parents and son-in-law, H. Andrew Schwartz.

The family will be gathering and receiving friends at 2720 East Overlook, Cleveland Heights, OH from 6:30 to 8:30 pm Monday, September 14th.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Reserve Care, formerly Hospice of the Western Reserve which provided exceptional palliative care. The family wishes to thank a team of caregivers for their compassionate care and end-of-life companionship. The love these people shared with Jerry and his family will be remembered forever. No words could ever express how much they are and will always be appreciated. May Gerald’s memory be a blessing to all who knew him.
