Gregg was born Sept. 2, 1952, in Cleveland, Ohio, the first-born son of Jerry and Joyce Lurie. They lived in Beachwood, then Shaker Heights, where Gregg graduated from high school in 1970.
Gregg attended The Ohio State University. He spent most of his time at the campus airport, where he learned to fly airplanes. He became an accomplished pilot, and over the years owned several airplanes, his favorite of which was a King Air E90, which he piloted even in the final year of his life.
In 1974, Gregg married Debbie Berkson, whom he met at Ohio State. Their 25-year marriage produced two children, Kevin and Jessica, and four granddaughters, who remained the center of their parents’ lives.
After college, Gregg came to work in the family business, Florian Fashions, eventually succeeding his father as CEO.
After closing the family business, which he managed with his twin brothers, Keith and Kenny, Gregg moved into commercial real estate, where he successfully developed properties for 32 years.
In the late 1990s, he moved to South Florida, where eventually his two children, Kevin and Jessica relocated when they completed college.
Gregg was particularly attracted to things and people who enjoyed his brand of “go,” a non-stop pursuit of fun and funky fulfillment – be it in clothing, cars, relaxation or holidays. His favorite car was a canary yellow Jaguar XKE, which he drove in the early to mid-1970s – much to the amazement, admiration and envy of every college sophomore and junior at Ohio State.
He loved skiing, scuba diving in the Bahamas, and dining at The Palm restaurant – and often shared these joys with his family.
Gregg was gracious, generous and always sought to be in a social whirl. He eagerly shared his joie de vivre with those he loved.
He is survived by his children, son Kevin Lurie and his wife Jill, their daughters Olivia (13), and Violet (10); daughter Jessica and her husband Terry Dowling, and their daughters, Charlotte (12) and Quinn (10); Gregg’s brothers, Keith and Kenny Lurie and Kenny’s wife Sunny; and Gregg’s ex-wife, Debbie Berkson Lurie; as well as two nephews and four nieces, and numerous friends who were graced by his lifelong love of fun and frolic.
The family has asked that donations in Gregg’s memory be made to Healing Hearts Florida http://Hhflorida.com or Hatzalah South Florida https://hsfems.org or the charity of your choice.
