H. Jeffrey Schwartz—a native of East Cleveland, a self-made man who gained international prominence in corporate bankruptcy and restructuring law, and a father whose lovingkindness garnered his children’s enduring love—passed away in his children’s embrace on Sunday, April 26th, 2026, in Santa Monica, California. He was a composed gentleman to the end, having never once complained about the cancer that afflicted him. In this way as in so many others, he was an outlier.
He is survived by his children Brandon Schwartz, Brooke Schwartz, and Sean (Peter) Shepard. He now reunites with his late daughter, Kayla N. Schwartz (Z”l), having recently told his family, “Kayla deserves good company.” He is also survived by his brother Mark (Evelyn) Schwartzberg, and was predeceased by his sister, Toby Greenwald.
His parents Abraham and Renee Schwartzberg (née Krivitsky) had separately survived the Holocaust and by historical happenstance met one another during the war in Tashkent, then part of the Soviet Union. Shortly after war’s end, the pair defected to the West and had the good fortune of coming under the protection of U.S. Army soldiers in a displaced persons camp in Essen, Germany. These were the first Americans they had ever met. The United States soon granted them citizenship, and they built a new life in Cleveland, where Jeffrey was born on November 5, 1954. Due to several peculiar blessings of American life—from its foundational liberties to the meritocratic opening of the professional mainstream and the well-timed 1978 enactment of the Bankruptcy Code—Jeffrey was able to achieve his full personal and professional potential. For these reasons, he revered this country and, with neither bombast nor chauvinism, felt it was in a league of its own.
From humble origins, he graduated Heights High (’72) and excelled in college and law school. He quickly built a professional reputation as an articulate dealmaker who found value that might otherwise have been overlooked. He made four decades of meaningful contributions to the bankruptcy bar, to distressed corporations, and to his clients’ interests and fortunes. When friends poked fun at bankruptcy law as vulturous, he said softly with a smirk that it “breathes new life into corporations.” In fact, he took pride in helping working people to continue putting food on their tables wherever possible. And in a moment of national need following the September 11th terrorist attacks, he helped ensure aviation security as Co-Chair of International Total Services, Inc. (ITS), a pre-board aviation screening firm whose checkpoints had not been breached. The government took the unprecedented step of advancing ITS a debtor-in-possession loan to secure 102 airports while TSA was being stood up.
Jeffrey lived the life of the mind. His intellectual awakening began with Bob Dylan’s “Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again.” For the remainder of his life, he declared Dylan to be “the greatest poet since Shakespeare.” He said decidedly, “There is Bob Dylan and there is everyone else.” In college, he took up philosophy and became a lifelong reader. He told his children he knew he was on the right path in life when he laughed aloud in the library reading Don Quixote. He amassed his own library that spanned the Debates on the Constitution to a dogeared pocketbook called Shakespeare’s Insults for Lawyers. A history buff, Jeffrey is known to have watched documentaries on the Battle of Stalingrad more than a hundred times. On this he said he “know[s] how it ends” but he “has to watch again to make sure the Germans still lose.”
Jeffrey began his career in 1980 as a law clerk to the Honorable Joseph T. Molitoris and the Honorable William J. O’Neill in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Ohio. The judges applauded his work, often issuing opinions and rulings with no edits. The timing worked in his favor, as he was assigned to the White Motor Corporation bankruptcy. It proved to be a formative education in bankruptcy law and accelerated his career.
He soon joined Benesch Friedlander, Coplan & Aronoff, where he made partner in his early thirties and built a major restructuring practice. Having achieved immense success in Cleveland, he moved to New York in 2005 and took on leading roles in the bankruptcy and restructuring practices of Dechert and later DLA Piper, Brown Rudnick, Robins Kaplan, and McKool Smith. He returned to Cleveland in recent years and retired from the practice of law at Calfee, Halter & Griswold. He was a lawyer’s lawyer.
During his career, he led successful engagements involving several significant companies. Among others, this included the Bayou Funds LLC, Cardinal Industries, Inc., Corinthian Colleges, Inc., ITT Education, Inc., and Digital Domain Media Group, Inc. Additionally, he played a leading role in the matters of NCS Healthcare and Revco, whose leadership teams stayed his close friends for the rest of his life.
Jeffrey was well-liked and admired by his friends, to whom he was always loyal. He received the same from them in return. His family, friends, colleagues, and clients prized his wit, personality, advice, moral compass, and his clarity of thought and powers of expression.
It was to his children that Jeffrey remained most devoted throughout his life. He promoted their education and encouraged their self-actualization in their respective fields. He corrected their grammar from the moment they spoke their first words, which they later came to appreciate. He was a great enabler of their personal growth, a confidant and trusted advisor, and a reliable refuge from the vicissitudes of life.
