GOULDER Joan Goulder (née Luntz) beloved wife and mother, housewares design innovator, and businesswoman, died peacefully on December 25,2017. Born on September 7, 1922 to Abe and Fan Luntz of Canton, Ohio. Joan attended Hathaway Brown School in Shaker Heights and graduated from Vassar College with a BA in European History where she also studied to be a professional singer. In 1945, she married George V. Goulder, a plastics manufacturer and entrepreneur. He was the love of her life and they built a home and raised six children together. In the late 1950s, the couple pioneered the design and manufacture of plastic dinnerware for the home consumer market. Joan's square-with-rounded-corners plastic dishes, offered in fashionable color tones, was the first highly styled plastic dinnerware in the world, and literally set the table for non-china dishware in American homes. Her designs won an award from the Museum of Modern Art and inspired Home Furnishings News to name her “The Cala Lily Lady” for leading the cala lily decor theme of the 1980s.The company was eventually renamed "Designs By Joan Luntz" to focus on Joan’s housewares designs, including sheets, towels, wallpaper, and more, as Joan worked closely with many of the nation's most prominent housewares manufacturers well into the 21st century. In 2013, Joan and her work were honored by the Western Reserve Historical Society's year-long "Entrepreneurship" exhibit. Beloved mother of Cindy Goulder (Brooklyn, NY), Pat Goulder (Paris, France), Lawrence Goulder (Palo Alto, CA), Lisa (Peter Elman) Goulder (Oakland, CA), Diane (William Steiniger) Eaton (Atlanta, GA), Susanna Goulder (David) Bradford (Sagamore Hills, OH) and four grandchildren, Maggie and Liz Goulder, and Willy and Katie Elman.
