Appropriately named “Joy,” she brought joyful exuberance to every part of her century-long life—her beloved family, enduring friendships, and every community she touched.
Born on August 13, 1923, to Louise and Bernard Dubin, Joy grew up in Far Rockaway, NY. She attended Bernau University in Gainesville, Georgia, where she formed lifelong friendships and soon after met the love of her life, Richard Rose, on a blind date. Richard was on a weekend pass from a nearby Army base. Their connection was immediate, and they became engaged before he was shipped overseas with General Patton’s Third Army during World War II.
While Richard fought in Europe—helping to liberate the Ohrdruf concentration camp—Joy served her country stateside, working in Washington D.C. with a select group of women tasked with cracking the Nazi code. Though she never shared the details of her work, Richard always credited her with ending the war early so he could come home unharmed. They were married on December 1, 1945, at the Carter Hotel in downtown Cleveland.
Joy and Richard shared 70 wonderful years together, raising two sons, Clark and Howard (deceased), volunteering at Mt. Sinai Hospital and Bellefaire, performing in theatrical productions at Euclid Avenue Temple, and traveling the world. After retiring to Palm Beach, FL, Joy embraced an active lifestyle of tennis, swimming, bridge, Mah Jongg—and no one could ever beat her at Scrabble.
After Richard’s passing, Joy returned to Cleveland to be close to her family. She is survived by her son Clark (Sharon); her grandchildren: Courtney (Matthew), Laura (Ravish), Sam, and Dan (Jennifer); and her great-grandchildren: Ella, Noah, Layla, Abbey, and Adam.
She was also predeceased by her beloved son Howard and his cherished wife, Cynthia, whose memory remained dear to the family.
A private graveside service will be held at IJ Morris at Star of David in the Palm Beaches.
Joy’s face always lit up in the presence of children. In her honor, donations may be made to the Ganon Gil Preschool Fund at Congregation Mishkan Or, 26000 Shaker Blvd., Beachwood, OH.
