Larry Marvin Yuspeh passed away on Sunday, November 16 in Cleveland, Ohio, after having suffered a severe heart attack a few days earlier. Larry was a dedicated, loving, and inspirational husband, father, and grandfather. Larry was born on June 26, 1952, in New Orleans, Louisiana. He graduated from Isidore Newman School in New Orleans in 1970. He then graduated from the University of Texas at Austin, earning his BA degree with high honors in economics and government in 1973. He was also elected as a member of Phi Beta Kappa. After his graduation from college, Larry moved to Washington, DC, where he had important responsibilities related to the federal government. He was first an analyst for the Center for Defense Information, a think tank that sought to improve aspects of defense strategy and management. He then became a professional staff member of the United States Senate Committtee on Small Business. These were both positions of exceptional responsibility for someone of his youth.
When he completed this work, he returned to New Orleans to assist his parents in managing their family business, Sun Distributing Co., Inc. The company was an important regional wholesale distributor for automotive, marine, and industrial supplies. Larry was instrumental in identifying an attractive opportunity for the business to be acquired. Most of Larry’s professional career was with Louisiana Workmen’s Compensation Corporation (LWCC) based in Baton Rouge. Larry was with the organization for over 25 years in Strategic Risk and Strategy Management. He was widely recognized as an authority on many aspects of the complex field of Workmen’s Compensation insurance. Associated with his work at LWCC, he became a part-time instructor at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, which he continued until his death.
To have known Larry was to be inspired by him, and his memory will live on loudly in the hearts and minds of those whose lives intersected with his. He had a generous heart, a quick mind, an enthusiastic laugh, and an insatiable curiosity. Larry is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Margot. Larry was totally devoted to Margot. He and Margot had decided several years ago to move to the Cleveland area to be near their son and had established a wonderful life for themselves in their new home town. He is also survived by his son, Andrew (Erica) of Cleveland, Ohio and their 9 children; his daughter Margaret Young (Logan) of Chattanooga, Tennessee and their 2 children, and his brother Alan (Janet) of Baltimore, Maryland along with his best pal Teddy, the toy poodle.
