Lawrence I Byrnes

Age, 95 years young, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 3, 2019. Beloved son of the late Sara and Dr. Sam Bernstein, Grand Rapids, Michigan, brother to Ilene and Bill Steiner (both deceased), loving and devoted husband to the late Judith (nee Mattlin) Byrnes, beyond remarkable and wonderful father to son, Marc (Viki), who referred to Larry as ""Dad of All Dads,"" grandfather to his buddies, Matthew (Eliza), Kyle (Andrea) and Gregory (Erica); and, great grandchildren, Blaire, Lila, Henry and Annie, nieces, Linda (Steiner), Julie (Rogen), nephews, Jeff (Steiner), Jon and Dr. Bruce (Rogen) and dear sister-in-law, Gloria (nee Merle deceased) Rogen. Larry was undeniably ""one of a kind."" His smile, dry sense of humor, keen wit, guile, street smarts and genuine kindness touched many a family member, friend, peer, client and co-worker. A Navy veteran of WWII, Larry post-war came to Cleveland, graduated from Western Reserve Law School, married Judy (nee Mattlin), daughter of the late Helen and Jack (Mattlin); and, began his career in law, specializing in bankruptcy. An avid boater, he proudly served as Commodore of The Mentor Yacht Club in 1970, where Judy, Marc and Larry made friends for life. A one-time partner in the distinguished law firm of Spieth, Bell, McCurdy and Newell, Larry represented Midwest Air Charter which was acquired by Airborne Express. In 1979, Larry became Airborne Express first president, based in Wilmington, Ohio, where he served for over a decade. Thereafter, he served as special counsel and advisor to both Lamson & Sessions and Oswald Companies. Larry and his bride, Judy, traveled the world prior to her passing in October 1995, yet devoted their beautiful lives to family and friends. A Memorial gathering honoring Larry will be held at a future date. In the interim, donations can be made to the United Way of Greater Cleveland, the Jewish Community Federation or JBC Bellefaire.

I am so glad you had Larry for so long. For me, his death is the end of an era. I loved Judy and Larry so much, and I have many great memories of them, and of you. May your memories sustain you in your grief.
