

Dr. Leonard H. "Leny" Bernstein, M.D., age 88, passed away peacefully on February 16, 2026, in Chagrin Falls, Ohio. A devoted physician, beloved family man, and cherished friend to many, Leny lived a life marked by compassion, intellect, and an enduring sense of humor.
Born on April 12, 1937, in Steubenville, Ohio, Leny’s early years laid the foundation for a lifetime of service and excellence. He graduated from Western Reserve University in 1959 and went on to earn his medical degree from Case Western Reserve Medical School in 1963. Following his graduation, he completed his internship at Mt. Sinai Hospital and pursued a urological residency at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Leny’s distinguished medical career was centered at Marymount Hospital, where he was not only a highly respected urologist but also a trusted leader. He served as both Chief of Urology and President of the Medical Staff. Known for his surgical precision and unwavering dedication to patient care, Leny earned the admiration of colleagues and patients alike. Those who knew Leny will remember him for the twinkle in his eye that often preceded a story or a wry punchline—always delivered with impeccable timing—and for the deep sincerity with which he engaged others. Leny's kindness was genuine and far-reaching; he made everyone feel seen and valued.
Leny is survived by his daughter Jill Schwartz, son Stephen Bernstein and daughter-in-law Leslie Bernstein; his grandchildren Carly and Lacey Rose, Rachel and Jack Doherty, Erin Schwartz, Grant Schwartz, and Ryan Schwartz; his great-granddaughter Blake Rose, and many special nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his beloved wife Sue—his best friend and partner through life—as well as his siblings Paul and Ieda, and his parents Sadie and Jacob.
A funeral service honoring Dr. Leonard H. Bernstein’s life will be held on February 19 at 11:00 AM at Congregation Mishkan Or, 26000 Shaker Boulevard, Beachwood, Ohio. The service will be live-streamed on the Congregation Mishkan Or Chapel website. Shiva will occur immediately after interment at the Schwartz residence until 4:00 PM and from 6:00-8:00 PM; Friday 2:00-4:00 PM; and Sunday 1:00-4:00 PM.
