Lois Cone

Lois Cone, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, lived a remarkable 100 years filled with love, laughter, music, family, and community. She was a woman of energy, curiosity, creativity, and strong convictions, and she brought those qualities to everything she did.

Lois passed away peacefully last week, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and a life extraordinarily well lived.

Raised in Cleveland Heights, Lois graduated from Cleveland Heights High School at the remarkable age of 16. She then traveled by train to Ann Arbor, Michigan, to attend the University of Michigan, where she spent two years before completing her degree at Mather College in Cleveland. The day after her graduation, Lois married Raymond Cone, the love of her life, whom she had met on a blind date. Together, they shared a long and loving marriage filled with family, friendship, music, and dancing.

Lois was a dedicated teacher who touched the lives of many students and took great pride in her work. She was also an accomplished seamstress, creating stylish and imaginative clothing for herself and others. Music was another great love. A talented jazz pianist, she continued playing well into her 90s. She also loved to dance, and her family fondly remembers Lois and Raymond as being among the last couples on the dance floor, dancing with joy and energy.

Lois was deeply engaged in her community and in the causes, she believed in. She was active in the Sisterhood of the former Fairmount Temple, now Congregation Mishkan Or, and was involved with Hadassah. She was also politically active throughout her life and proudly supported the Democratic Party.

Above all, Lois treasured her family. Her zest for life, independent spirit, creativity, and love of music and dance will remain a lasting part of the family she cherished so deeply.

In her later years, she faced the challenges of dementia with courage and grace, surrounded by the love and care of her family.

She leaves behind her daughters, Susan (Paul) Porges, Ilana (Norman) Facter, and Randi Cone; grandchildren, Sarah (Scott) Facter, Jordon Facter (fiancée Katie Moran), Kyra Cone, Adam (Jodie) Porges, Alexa (Jess) Anastasio; and great-grandchildren Jaden, Cameron, Mason Facter, Sonnie and Juliet Porges. Lois also cherished her nephews, Marc and Gary (Judy) Greenwald. She was predeceased by her husband Raymond, her sister Gloria Greenwald, and her beloved family.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, September 23rd at 10:00 a.m. at the Berkowitz Kumin Bookatz Memorial Chapel, 1985 S. Taylor Road in Cleveland Heights. Interment will follow at Mayfield Cemetery, 2749 Mayfield Road, Cleveland Heights.

Shiva will be observed at the home of Ilana and Norman Facter, 5178 Crofton Avenue, Solon, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and again from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
