It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Michael Charney, a beloved educator, organizer, political activist, and lifelong advocate for social justice, on Friday, January 2, 2026, at the age of 75.
Born on March 31,1950 in Worcester, MA. to Albert and Shirley Charney, Michael spent his life fighting for racial equality, the empowerment of marginalized communities, and the improvement of workers' rights. As a passionate educator, he inspired countless students, while his work as a union organizer provided vital support to workers seeking better wages and working conditions. His tireless commitment to social justice and equity left a profound mark on the communities he served.
Michael’s legacy is one of action and compassion. Beyond his professional endeavors, he was a mentor to many, shaping the lives of young people with his wisdom and unwavering belief in the power of education and activism. Whether through his political involvement or his everyday acts of kindness, Michael’s impact was felt by all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife CJ Prentiss and his stepson Maurice McIntosh. Michael is survived by his beloved sister, Jill Charney (Mark Golden); his nephew, Jesse; his niece, Barrie; his stepson, Albert McIntosh (Donna); and many cherished friends, colleagues, and fellow activists who admired and respected him.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, at 11:00 AM at the Berkowitz-Kumin-Bookatz Memorial Chapel, followed by interment at Lakeview Cemetery.
