Rabbi Michael Oppenheimer DD passed away on September 4, 2019 at the age of 77. He was born in Chicago, Illinois and received a BA from University of Chicago, a BHL, MAHL, Doctor of Divinity and rabbinic ordination from the Hebrew Union College and an RJE from the Association of Reform Jewish Educators. He engaged in creating a committed relationship as the spiritual leader and rabbi of Suburban Temple-Kol Ami from 1976-2002 followed by Emanuel Jacob Congregation of Mansfield.. He was also the rabbi of Tree of Life Temple, Chicago Sinai Congregation and Washington Hebrew Congregation. Passionate about education, he taught as the adjuct professor at John Carroll University, Baldwin Wallace College, the University of South Carolina and George Washington University.
Rabbi Oppenheimer was very involved in a number of community and national organizations including: as a life member of the Jewish Chautauqua Society, and a member of the Rabbinic Council of the Association of Reform Zionists of America-World Union of North America, the National Rabbinic Cabinet of United Jewish Communities-the Federations of North America, the National Joint Commission on Jewish Education of the Central Conference of American Rabbis-Union for Reform Judaism, past president of the Cleveland Board of Rabbis, member of Leadership Cleveland and board member of the Cleveland Round Table.
Michael was the son of the late Arthur and Herta Oppenheimer. Left to cherish his memory by his wife of 55 years, Carolyn (nee Nudell) Oppenheimer, daughter Rabbi Rachel (Jeff) Rembrandt, son David (Michelle) Oppenheimer, and adored grandchildren Jason, Micah and Hannah Rembrandt and Aron Oppenheimer. Funeral services will be held Sunday, September 8 at 2 PM at Suburban Temple-Kol Ami 22410 Chagrin Blvd. Beachwood, OH. Family will receive friends FOLLOWING SERVICES AT SUBURBAN TEMPLE UNTIL 5 PM, SUNDAY EVENING THE FAMILY WILL RECEIVE at the Montefiore Home (Maltz Auditorium) One David Myers Pkwy. Beachwood, OH. 7 PM-9 PM.( Minyan at 7:00 pm).
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to LifeBanc, Suburban Temple-Kol Ami or Emanuel Jacob Congregation.
