The long goodbye of Alzheimer’s finally ended for Paul Heit, 94, on April 30, 2025, when he died from a hip fracture, but comfortably, eased by the ministrations of the compassionate Miracle City Hospice staff. He was predeceased by two forces of nature to whom he referred as “his wives” and kept their photos close at hand, Sandra Schapiro Heit and Sylvia Milgram Heit.
Dementia took away much of his essence but couldn’t erase his sense of humor or our fond memories of him. He horseback rode at the Rocking Horse Ranch Resort with an unlit pipe between his teeth, drew “crazy mixed-up animals,” and loved travel, science fiction, opera, and Burt Bacharach. He was a mathematician, a teacher, and used computers when they were the size of warehouses with a memory of 2 MB (the computer, not him!). He relegated passion to his wives, but he rocked contentment.
He is mourned by his children, Erica (Erick) Remer, Mark Heit, and Shelly (Don Salvatore) Heit, (two of the three of which were guaranteed by our mother to have been his although we’re pretty sure we all were), and Barbara (Steven Lieberman) Milgram, Linda (Joel) Rosenberg, and Nancy Rick. He was a wonderful grandfather to Scott and Alex Remer; Stephen and Marti Heit; Jamie and Ricky Salvatore; Adam, Brian, and Stacie Rosenberg; Samantha and Carly Rick. He will also be missed by his kid brother, Jerry (Renee) Heit.
Private memorial services for family only.
The family will receive friends at the home of Erica and Erick Remer, 26075 Hurlingham Road in Beachwood on Friday, May 2nd from 1 pm - 4 pm, and Sunday, May 4th from 1 pm – 4 pm and 6 pm – 8 pm.
Contributions in memory of Paul can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or the charity of your choice.
We are comforted by the thought that he was greeted in the big Happy Hour in the sky with a hearty, “Paul!” and is enjoying a vodka tonic right now. L’Chaim!
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be left at www.bkbmc.com for the Heit family.
