Phyllis attended Shaker Heights High before pursuing her studies in American Studies at Western Reserve University, which is now known as Case Western Reserve University. In 1959, she embarked on a journey to Israel, where fate led her to meet her beloved future husband, Willy (predeceased). Upon returning together, they embarked on a joint venture, opening a grocery business that they successfully ran for over four decades. Remarkably, despite their busy work schedules, Phyllis and Willy managed to raise four children: Esther Sapell (David Rachelson), Elin Sapell Meyer, Elisabeth Sapell (David Posner), and Michael (Melinda) Sapell.
Phyllis took immense pride in her role as a grandmother and was cherished by her 14 grandchildren: Sam, Shira, Saul, Sadie, Sarah, Joshua, Samantha, Max, Jamie, Casey, Tony, Ryan, Jacob, and Zackary. In addition to her immediate family, Phyllis was an aunt to Leslie (Andy) Baker, Sharon (Bob) Desatnik, Debbie Halpern (Larry, deceased), David (Lora) Lewis, Lynn (Rick) Fishman, Ann Socher (David), Ellen Riggs (Marion), and Murray Lewis (Sue, deceased).
Throughout her life, Phyllis cultivated enduring friendships, notably with Flora Jacobs, Elaine Rubin and Marlene Miller whom she had known since childhood. Her relationships included extended family Sandra Meyer, Stuart Meyer, Ron and Linda Posner.
Phyllis Sapell's warmth and compassion were evident in the friendships she forged at the JCC water aerobics classes. She had an uncanny ability to connect with people, genuinely caring about their lives. She was an attentive listener who touched the hearts of everyone she encountered.
Phyllis Lewis Sapell will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all those fortunate enough to have crossed paths with her during her remarkable journey through life. Her legacy of empathy and genuine caring will continue to inspire and uplift those who remember her.
