We mourn the loss of Rafail Bederman, a legendary musician, singer, and entertainer in Northeast Ohio, who passed away earlier this week at the age of 92. A master of the button accordion and piano, Rafail was also a dedicated music teacher, dear friend to many, and a beloved family man.
Throughout his life, Rafail was committed to giving back. He volunteered regularly at Menorah Park and Montefiore care facilities, touching the lives of many with his kindness and warmth. A Holocaust survivor, Rafail's incredible journey began in Belarus, where at the age of 7, he was separated from his family. Miraculously, he made his way to Uzbekistan during World War II and was reunited with his loved ones at the war’s end.
Rafail started as a tradesman carpenter after finishing 7th grade of primary school in the Soviet Union. Having perfect pitch, he graduated from famous Gnessin Academy of Music in Moscow as a music teacher and choir director which spanned for 34 years.
After immigrating to the United States, Rafail embraced his new homeland with pride. He became a devoted supporter of Cleveland and was known for his vibrant personality, self-made spirit, and unconventional thinking. He was a dedicated husband to his late wife, Zinaida, and a proud father and grandfather, always entertaining and sharing joy during family gatherings.
Rafail is survived by his children, Alex (Yelena) Bederman, Helen (Michael) Zhabotinsky, and Ilya (Lana) Bederman; his grandchildren, Maria (Anthony) Lorello, Yekaterina Bederman, Vladimir Bederman, Anna (Jason) Friedman, Sophia Zhabotinsky, Matthew (Stephanie) Bederman, and Nicole Bederman; and several great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Zinaida.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, June 14th at 2:30 pm at the Berkowitz Kumin Bookatz Memorial Chapel, 1985 S. Taylor Road, Cleveland Heights. Interment will follow at Zion Memorial Park, 5461 Northfield Road, Bedford Heights.
Shiva will be observed at the Romantic Restaurant, 5131 Mayfield Road, Lyndhurst, from after interment until 8:00 pm.
Rafail’s legacy of love, resilience, and music will be deeply missed but forever cherished.
