

Richard Prober, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, educator, and engineer, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 24, 2025, at the age of 87.
Born on May 30, 1937, in Chicago, Illinois, Richard was the beloved son of the late Gabriel and Rose Prober. A passionate learner and dedicated academic, he earned both his Bachelor of Science from the Illinois Institute of Technology, and later went on to earn his Master’s & Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin.
Richard devoted much of his professional life to engineering and education. As a professional engineer and professor at Case Western Reserve University, he touched the lives of countless students and colleagues, inspiring with his intellect, curiosity, and generosity of spirit.
Beyond his professional achievements, Richard led a rich personal life. Together with his cherished wife Joanne, he shared a love of travel, theater, and music. Their adventures and shared passions were a testament to the joy they found in each other and in the world around them. They were members of Park Synagogue for over 50 years where they enjoyed attending Shabbat and holiday services.
He leaves behind a legacy of love and learning in his children: Benjamin Prober, Daniel Prober (Nancy), and Joshua Prober (Melissa), and in his grandchildren: Jonah Prober and Eliana Prober. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, David Prober.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, at 2:00 PM at Berkowitz-Kumin-Bookatz Memorial Chapel. A committal service will follow on Friday, May 30, 2025, at 10:00 AM at Memorial Park Cemetery, 9900 Gross Point Rd., Skokie, IL 60076.
Richard will be remembered for his deep intellect, gentle heart, and unwavering commitment to his family and his field. He will be dearly missed and forever cherished. In lieu of flowers, donations to Park Synagogue or the Cleveland Orchestra.
