December 23, 1931 – May 3, 2026
Richard Speer passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 3, 2026, at the age of 94.
Born in Cleveland, Ohio, on December 23, 1931, Richard was the beloved son of Merle and Melba Speer. He grew up in Shaker Heights and graduated from Shaker Heights High School before continuing his education at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business.
In 1957, Richard married the love of his life, Barbara, beginning a devoted partnership that spanned 69 wonderful years. Together, they built a life centered on family, shared adventures, and deep companionship, traveling the world side by side.
Richard had a successful career starting and running his own companies, initially in the steel industry and later providing environmental products to other businesses. Beyond his professional life, he embraced many passions. He was an avid stamp collector, a loyal fan of Cleveland sports teams, and enjoyed spending time at the racetrack. He loved playing bridge, engaging in lively conversations, and above all, being surrounded by family. His favorite holiday was Thanksgiving, when everyone gathered together—an occasion he cherished deeply.
Richard is survived by his loving wife, Barbara; his children, Susan Speer Zenn (Michael), Ellen Speer Davis (Gary), and Robert Speer (Adalynn); his sister, Marlyn Gilbert; his grandchildren, Andrew and Erica Zenn, Bobby Davis (Daniella), Michael Davis, and Alexandra Davis Ruben (James), and Ari Speer; and his great-grandchildren, Nellie Davis and Suzie Davis.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, at 1:30 p.m. at Congregation Mishkan Or, 26000 Shaker Blvd., Beachwood, Ohio 44122.
