Ronald Edward “Buddy” Kohl, born April 5, 1937, passed away Tuesday, June2 at the age of 89. A resident of Solon, Ohio, for 45 years, Buddy was a man defined by his warmth, his humor, and his devotion to family.
Buddy was born to Delores Newman Rose and was lovingly raised in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, by Maurice and Eve Kohl.
He proudly served his country as a medic in the United States Army. After returning to Cleveland, Buddy built a career as a manufacturer’s representative selling men’s clothing across several states, following in the footsteps of his father. Together with his mother, he ran Kay’s for Men, carrying on that family tradition with pride until the Covid era brought it to a close.
At the center of Buddy’s life was his beloved wife, Marsha Kohl. Their enduring love story spanned more than six decades—63 years filled with devotion, partnership, laughter, and countless memories. Together they built a home that welcomed family, friends, and anyone fortunate enough to cross their path.
Family was everything to Buddy, and he was never happier than when surrounded by his children and grandchildren—whether cheering from the sidelines, sharing a meal, or simply enjoying a conversation around the kitchen table. His family will remember his unwavering support, his steady presence, and his ability to make every gathering feel special.
Buddy was an avid golfer and a ball player who took to the field with the Beachwood Men’s League. But more than anything, he was a consummate joker. Whether it was a well-timed one-liner, a practical joke, or a story told for the hundredth time with the same enthusiasm as the first, Buddy had a gift for making people laugh. He was famous for his “Buddy Dollars”—million-dollar bills bearing his own grinning face, which he handed out freely as his singular way of expressing both his affection and his humor in a single gesture. Family gatherings were never complete without him holding court and keeping everyone entertained.
Buddy never met a stranger. He possessed an easy charm that drew people to him and a sense of humor that kept them close. Whether on the golf course, at the ball field, in his store, or around the family dinner table, he had a unique ability to make people feel welcome, valued, and entertained. His laughter was contagious, and his presence made every occasion brighter. That genuine interest in others earned him lifelong friendships, and he had a remarkable knack for striking up a conversation with anyone and leaving them feeling like an old friend.
Buddy was preceded in death by his parents, Maurice and Eve Kohl, and his sister, Karen.
He is survived by his loving wife, Marsha; his children, Lisa Kohl and Murray Kohl (Michelle); his cherished grandchildren, Sarah, Margaret, and Rachel Kohl, and Ethan and Zachary Kohl; his sister, Linda Rose Burchett and Larry Burchett; and his extended family, Stephen and Susan Bergman, Paul and Christine Bergman. A friend to many and a loving uncle and cousin to many more, Buddy leaves behind a wide circle of people who held him dear.
Buddy’s legacy lives on in the laughter he inspired, the values he instilled, and the love he shared so freely. Though his absence leaves a profound void, his spirit will remain present in the stories his family tells, the traditions they continue, and the countless lives he touched. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered always.
Family and friends will gather at 25838 Fairmount Boulevard on Wednesday, June 3 between the hours of 1:00PM – 4:00PM and 6:00PM – 8:00pm.
