Sophia Halpern

Born January 13, 1957, Sophia was a lifelong Clevelander, raised in the Greek Orthodox faith, and a devoted homemaker who built her life around her family. She had an unmistakable eye for the simple and the chic, and she loved to use it. She spent happy hours shopping in Chagrin Falls, decorating and redecorating her home, and hunting down the eclectic and the unexpected. For a time she turned that gift into a business of her own, running a consignment shop called Sophie’s Seconds.

She is survived by her husband, Sidney Halpern; her sons, Joshua Halpern and his wife, Viena, and Adam Halpern; her sister, Helen Huebner, and her husband, Jim Huebner; her brother, Nick; her brother-in-law, Tom, and his sons, Jimmy and Tommy; and her best friend, Frank Spoto, who stood beside her through every moment of her illness and never left her side.

She joins her beloved mother, Harriet, who came to Cleveland from Greece and to whom she was devoted, and her sisters, Toula and Alexandria, who were also lost to cancer.

Services will be held at Chesterland Memorial Park/B’nai Jeshurun Cemetery, 11529 Chillicothe Rd., Chesterland, Ohio 44026, Tuesday, September 22 at 11am. No Visitation.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Sophia’s memory to the Rose Ella Burkhardt Brain Tumor and Neuro-Oncology Center at Cleveland Clinic. The Taussig Cancer Center 10201 Carnegie Avenue, Cleveland, OH 44106
