Born and raised in Burlington, Vermont to Mary and Harris Brown, Stanley grew up with his older brother Myles and his younger sisters Sarah and Ruth. Stanley first honed the skills and talents that would carry him through life. He was scrappy, athletic, and daring.
As a teen, he attended Camp Robin Hood, owned by his aunt and uncle, Duff and Andy Friedman. He loved it there, spending several summers as a counselor and remained connected to the Realm throughout his life, passing along his love for camp to his children and grandchildren.
After attending the University of Vermont, Stanley joined the Air Force. A proud veteran, Stan was stationed in Europe during the Korean War. Upon returning stateside, he attended dental school at Western Reserve in Cleveland. To this day, he remains the only graduate of the program who never took the Dental Admission Test.
It was in Cleveland that Stan met Barbara Frankel in September of 1957. In October, Barbara surprised Stan and announced they were engaged, and in March, they married. This whirlwind romance lasted 67 years.
Stan loved practicing dentistry not only because he wanted to help people be healthy but also because once he had a patient in the chair, he had a captive audience for his stories, which were plentiful. He never turned anyone away and he helped countless patients overcome their fears. As his children came to know all too well, everyone knew Dr. Brown.
If ever a guy was in the right place at the right time, it was Stan when, in 1970, he happened to be at an event where Nick Mileti was talking about the pro basketball team he was bringing to Cleveland and mentioned that the team needed a dentist. So began a 20 year stint as the team dentist of the Cavaliers. He loved everything about it, especially the bonds he made with the players and coaches and their families.
Although it was not easy being Jewish in Burlington, Vermont, Stan became a Bar Mitzvah and in Cleveland, became heavily involved in Suburban Temple, where he served as president. He was an active member of the Shaker Dad’s Club, and he supported the National Junior Tennis League.
After practicing dentistry for three decades, Stan retired from dentistry and moved on to enjoy three more decades that included grandparenting, traveling, becoming a digital citizen, stamp collecting, bird watching, picture taking, and donut chasing. Stan never met a person he couldn’t talk to, which led to him becoming the “mayor” of Beach Place, their second home in Florida where he and Barb enjoyed many winters.
Stan lived his life according to two mantras: he always put others first; and every day he put his feet on the floor was a good day. He was fiercely independent, fiercely proud, fiercely kind, and he will be fiercely missed.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sister, Ruth; his children Andy (Cindy), Steven (Pam), Robert (Darryl Uy), Jody Podl (Tod), his grandchildren Jamie Sharrow (Pahl), Marly, Madelyn Coldren (Britain), Daniel, Caroline, Matthew, Josh, and Rachel; and his great grandchildren Mary and Libby.
A memorial service will be held at Suburban Temple – Kol Ami 22401 Chagrin Blvd. Beachwood, OH 44122 on Thursday, April 3, 2025 at 1PM with military honors. The family will be sitting shiva after the memorial service at the home of Tod and Jody Podl 24026 Laureldale Rd., Shaker Heights, OH 44122 from 2:30PM to 4:30PM and 6:30PM to 830PM.
