Susan (Weinberg) Scheps, age 82, of Chardon, Ohio, passed away peacefully with her family at her side on November 12, 2025, after a battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. She was born to Elmer and Rose Weinberg on April 1, 1943, in Cleveland, Ohio, where she attended Heights High School. She earned her bachelor’s degrees in English and Spanish from University of Toledo, where she met her husband Lawrence (Larry) to whom she was married for over 59 years.
She earned a master’s degree in library science from Case Western University and became a passionate and beloved children’s librarian at Noble Road Library, Fairmount Temple, and then at Shaker Heights Public Library for 29 years, where she was the supervisor of the Children’s Services Department. She wrote hundreds of book reviews for the School Library Journal, and was active in the American Library Association, including a term on the Caldecott committee. She loved telling stories, reading, nature, and getting to know children and their families at the library. But one of her favorite activities was snuggling with her grandchildren and reading together. After retiring, she volunteered for CASA for Kids of Geauga County. She was a founding member of Temple Israel Ner Tamid.
Susan is survived by her loving husband, daughters Debby Baker (Chris) and Julie Rabinowitz (Dave), and cherished grandchildren, Sam Baker, and Jake, Zack and Will Rabinowitz. She was preceded in death by her grandchildren Emma Rabinowitz and Simon Baker.
A burial service will take place at Mount Olive Cemetery (27855 Aurora Rd., Solon, OH) on Sunday, November 16 at 3pm. The family will welcome family and friends directly after the service.
Donations in Susan’s memory may be made to Hearts and Hands of CASA Geauga County (heartsandhandsofcasa.org/), First Book (firstbook.org), or Hospice of the Western Reserve (hospicewr.org/give).
