Born on August 16, 1936, Bruce grew up in Collinwood, Ohio as an only child. He spent most of his life as a proud resident of Mentor-on-the-Lake, where he built a life centered on family, hard work, and simple joys.
Bruce dedicated 30 years of service to General Motors, working at the Coit Road, Elyria, and Brook Park plants before retiring from the Brook Park facility.
Following retirement, Bruce and his beloved wife, Elaine, enjoyed traveling throughout Ohio and Pennsylvania, taking scenic drives through small towns and visiting covered bridges together. These adventures created cherished memories and reflected their shared love of exploring the beauty and history of the region.
A lifelong student of history, Bruce was an avid reader who enjoyed attending antique car shows and learning about the past. He also possessed a creative spirit and found great joy in painting, drawing, and woodworking. Among his favorite projects were the handcrafted wooden trucks and cars he lovingly made for his grandchildren.
Bruce was a devoted Cleveland Browns fan and rarely missed a Sunday football game. His sons often teased him by suggesting the Browns played better when he wasn’t watching, a family joke that always brought laughter.
Above all else, Bruce treasured his beloved wife of 51 years, Elaine, affectionately known as his “Baby.” His greatest joy in life was spending time with those he loved, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Bruce is survived by his loving wife, Elaine Hemphill; his son, Larry Hemphill (Stacy); and his stepchildren, Brian Case (Theresa), Barbra “Barbie” Baka (Mark), and Paul Case. He also leaves behind 12 cherished grandchildren: Danyelle (Case) Engle, Timmy Case, Tommy Case, Joe Case, Katelyn Case, Michael Baka, Jennifer (Baka) Northern, David Baka, Julie Case, Molly Case, Danny Hemphill, and Kevin Hemphill; as well as 12 beloved great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Russell and Helen (Prieur) Hemphill, and his son, Keith Hemphill.
Bruce will be remembered for his creativity, silliness, quiet strength, and unwavering love for his wife, and the many lives he touched throughout his 89 years. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
A Family Memorial Service celebrating Bruce’s life will be held at a later date.
