2020.
Emma was born on April 14,1958 to WC and Mattie Walton Sr. in Akron,
(Hale County), Alabama. To their union, eight children were born with her
being the baby of the family.
Emma’s spiritual life began at an early age at First Baptist Church in Akron,
Alabama. She later joined and was an active member of Mt. Pleasant
Baptist Church in Cleveland, OH where she sang in the choir, and was a
member of the Labor of Love Committee.
Emma’s formative years were spent in Akron, AL. She graduated from
Akron Community School East in 1976. On June 27, 1975 she married
the love of her life, her High school Sweetheart, Ivory Joe Hunter. They
dated for four years and were married for over forty-two (42) years, totaling
forty-six (46) years of love and happiness. To their union, two beautiful
children were born.
Emma immediately embraced her role as a mother and military spouse,
supporting her Soldier (Ivory) as they served in the military all around
the world. During this time, she worked and served in many capacities
in the Department of Defense. Prior to Ivory’s retirement in 1994, they
settled into their “forever home” in Shaker Heights, OH. She remained
employed with Department of Defense (DOD) within the Cleveland
Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS), serving as a Lead Medical
Technician until her death.
Anyone that knew Emma knows that she never met a stranger. Her warming
smile was so contagious. When you departed from the conversation, you
somehow felt related. She had a kind spirit that many loved to be around
her. She was positive in every situation, even up until her death. She had a
special way of encouraging you, that left you feeling like you could take over
the world. She would give you her last to include the clothes on her back.
She raised children other than her own that were like family, they still call
her Mom to this day. She looked out for others and often spoke her mind;
even if you did not ask for it. She had many friends whose relationship
became family. She Loved her family! There is nothing she wouldn’t do
for them. Her hobbies were shopping, physical fitness, spending time with
her grandkids and serving others. She and Ivory Joe cared for his two aunts
(Magnolia and Florence) until their deaths.
Emma was preceded in death by Ivory Joe, her loving husband of 42 years,
parents, WC and Mattie Walton Sr., sister, Barbara “Tiny” Williams and
brother, Otis Walton.
She leaves to cherish in her loving memories: her loving children; April
(Michael) Freeman of Camp Zama, Japan, Ivory Joe (Katrina) Hunter
II of Cleveland, Ohio, grandchildren Jasmine Wilson, William Michael
Freeman, Maddison Michaela Freeman, and Ivory Joe Hunter III; siblings;
Willie Curry, WC (Clara) Walton Jr., both of Tuscaloosa, Alabama; Audrey

of Akron, Alabama; in-laws Walter & Dorothy Jackson, Roland & Frankie
