Norman was born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the son of
Lawrence, Sr. and Beatrice Stout, who preceded him in death. He is the
youngest of three children: sister Barbara Andrews, deceased, and brother
Lawrence Stout, Jr. who still resides in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Norman began his career working in the family trucking business. A few
years later, he became one of the first Black bus drivers out of Pittsburgh
hired by the Greyhound Bus Lines. After leaving Greyhound, Norman
started the Cleveland branch of the Stout Trucking family business.
Norman loved the trucking business and quickly gained the respect of
other independent owned companies, (i.e. Bonnie Speed, Midway Delivery,
Industrial Transport and Friendly), to name a few. " Norm", as he was
called, was a good mechanic and was known by his neighbors to always
have a backyard of cars when he was at home belonging to friends, in need
of repair. Trucking and cars were his passion.
Norman spent most of his adult living and working years in Cleveland,
Ohio and was a resident of the LeeSeville-Miles community. In 1972 he
met Shirley, and they were united in 1974. Norman was a quiet person and
when not working, preferred staying at home with family. Norman also
enjoyed visiting family in California, Atlanta, Georgia, and Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania. He went to all the family reunions while his health permitted.
He enjoyed riding his motorcycle, watching sports and other special
programs on television. On March 20, 2005, Norman was baptized and
became a member of the Lee-Seville Baptist Church, where he remained a
member until illness prevented his participation.
Norman leaves to mourn his passing and cherish his memory, his wife
of 46 years, Shirley, brother Lawrence Stout, Jr., stepdaughters Charlene
Smith (Enorris, Sr.) of Euclid, Ohio, Sheryl Bennett of Atlanta, Georgia,
Grandchildren Erik CJ. Smith (Ebony), Enorris Smith, Jr. (Tiffany),
Shawnte Johnson (Steven), Shavon Smith, Jillian, William and Charles
Bennett, 14 great-grandchildren, a host of family members and "familylike friends.
