I’ve been searching for a man named Randy that drove  a school bus in the late 60’s.  Could this be him?  I hold many fond memories of him.

I don't consider myself a close friend of Randy's, but I know him from work at Ruhl&Ruhl. Randy was in the Bettendorf office, and I was in the Davenport office. We occasionally met up on Tuesday mornings to "tour" new listings. We always had good conversations about a lot of things-sports, etc. We joked a lot. Randy was always warm and outgoing, and I always enjoyed his sports background. I didn't know his rich history at Central, but I was  surprisingly happy to hear his stories after his passing. We didn't meet up as much as we used to, and I'm sorry about that. But I was a better person for having known Randy. RIP

On January 23, my dear husband died of covid complications. We are in mourning together.

I had the privilege of coaching track with Randy at Central High School.  He was so genuine and honest in his approach.  I learned a great deal from him.  I always appreciated his common sense, matter of fact way of looking at things.  He was nothing but kind to me and my family and he will be dearly missed.  Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

When my cousin, John Posey, informed me of the passing of Coach Peters, I became quickly overwhelmed with deep sadness and profound memories. I had not seen him since my college days, then found out in 2020 that Coach Peters still resided in Davenport and planned to give him a surprise visit, but Covid-19 stood as a roadblock. I’m hurt that I couldn’t share my global adventures in-person, as one of his pupils. 

Coach Peters trained me in the physical, psychological, technical and competitive nuances of athletics  that transformed me into a high school All-American basketball and football player while attending Davenport Central High School. His teachings carried forth into a successful collegiate and professional “football” career. I am both grateful and thankful for his mentorship.

I remember when Head Coach Grensing ended hoop practice at Central High, Coach Peters would wave me over for our 30 minutes ongoing one-on-one dual. Let’s just say that the action was rougher than most football practices I participated in. A man of few words, Coach Peters would offer a nod and a smile of approval that I could hang with a former college player. It’s the same smile he gave watching me play in the showcase game with future Detroit Pistons great, Isiah Thomas, at the Lou Olson’s High School All-American camp. Post game, he softly said, “Good job out there. It looked easier for you than our one-on-one games.” 

Our world is currently in desperate need of men like Coach Peters, who’s strong ethic, angelic nature and educational vision positively impacted so many, especially this first-generation college kid. Though I missed reuniting with him in Davenport, we’ll eventually gather for another game of one-on-one on a higher plane. I graduated from Davenport Central High School in 1987.  I was on the girls Track and Field team in the spring of '85, '86, and '87.  Mr. Peters was my coach, and I have positive memories from the track practices and the meets.  Coach Peters took us to the state meet and to the Drake Relays during those 3 years.  Now that I am a mother to 2 teenagers, I am amazed at the level of patience he had for us high schoolers!  He was a good human, and I know I am a better person due to my interactions with him during those years.  Peace to Coach Peters and his family.

Randy has been an integral part of our lives since the fall of 1974 when he signed to teach and coach at Davenport Central.  We taught together, coached together and painted together since that fall. Our sincere condolence.  Jim and Barb Groenenboom 

Dear Marilyn and Peters family,

I am so very sorry for the loss of your husband and father.  I was very lucky to know Randy.  When I was hired as the head boys track and field coach at Central, Randy was the first person to call me.  I am not sure how he got my number.  We talked many times over the eight years that I have been at Central.  I always looked forward to the starting of track season and getting to spend time with Randy at the track.   We talked about track, our athletes, and most importantly our families.  He was always there to help me when I needed advice and it made my life better for having known him.

Dear Marilyn, Sarah, and Peters  family:

I'm so very sorry for the loss of your husband and father. Randy was such a kind and good man--I'm so glad that I knew him! As you know, Randy, Jim Groenenboom, and their crew painted our house for the first time when Lizzie was just barely 4 years old! They did such a wonderful job--but even better was their playful interaction with Lizzie and Chris. The scraping and painting took over two months, I think--house hadn't been painted in years. By the time they were finished,  Randy and Jim felt like family members, and had made the days alone with two little children a lot better for me, too. When they packed up and left on the last day, I cried! Randy painted our house two more times after that--and by then, Sarah and Lizzie had met at high school and became such good friends to this day. 

My heart is full of sadness, but also full of caring for all of you and for the lovely memories of Randy.

Marilyn and all of your family - I am so sorry to learn of Randy's passing.  I was a Blue Devil in the late 70s and 80s, and, although our interactions were brief, they were always positive.  Both of you have smiles that light up your faces.  May your memories that seem like "just yesterday" comfort you.

Marilyn and family.....I am very sorry to learn of Randy's passing.  I had the good fortune to see Randy at work in the classroom and on the court, and to know him personally and casually........just a great guy and a good man.  My sympathies.....

My wife Teresa and I knew Randy. Randy was a teacher and coach when I met him. Randy was also the manager at Leclaire pool where a lot of guys from Central worked.
One day there was a gang of guys who wanted to fight Randy after closing. All of us  were working. Me , Curtis Craig and Bobby Bostic made sure that didn’t happen . Randy is a great man and a great Blue Devil.

Kim & I want to send our deepest condolences to Marilyn & family.  We were lucky enough to get to know Randy when our families merged.  We can attest to how much he loved his family as we spent many wonderful celebrations together.  He will be deeply missed and our  hearts are breaking along with you.

We're so sorry to hear about Randy. Without a doubt, one of the finest men I've ever known.  Randy was loved by his students, his athletes, and anyone who knew him. Never did forgive for moving to North though. ☺ We surely will lift you up to the Lord in days to come.

We will never forget when you did some painting on our house on Pershing  and what a good neighbor you were to help Mike move the new bath tub up those stairs to our bath room.

I first met Mr . Peters in 1974 when I was a sophomore at CHS , I wasn't much for school but I was fortunate enough to be in his class . He somehow made learning easy & fun . I never forgot him and the influence he had on my life . My sincere condolences to the Peters family

Marilyn. As I am in Florida, I am unable to attend your services for Randy. Were I home, I would want to be there to share with your children my enormous respect for Randy. Rarely does one know a fellow man more humble, generous, and honorable as Randy. A very special man. I remember too the special woman you were at UNI, and how perfect to find such a great partner. One of best memories is doing a mission trip to Yankton, S.D. Indian reservation and working on the school for a week.  They had a small gym and each day between works end and dinner we did one on one basketball.  Because I was football and he was basketball the games were really tough.  Our games and conversation cemented a life long memory and respect for Randy & Marilyn even though our lives took us out of the Quad Cities.  Our deepest sympathy to Marilyn and family.  Know that Randy is welcomed to his eternal rest with joy & singing for His "good and faithful servant".  There will be rejoicing when we all get together again. You are in our thoughts and prayers.  Randy  and I worked together in the early 70's for Barnard Implement setting up metal grain bins. Also as a 1st Cousin we saw each other at least monthly growing up. He was an Awesome out of the ordinary hard worker and a Super fun caring Cousin.  As a close partner in a small crew I really got to know how an exceptional person Randy was. I'm 5 years younger and a typical college kid. Randy treated me as an equal like no one else several years older then me. I'm very sorry for his close family as he was the best you could ever hope  for.  At the same time you can Celebrate his earthy life and also knowing he is without a doubt in Jesus's custody now.  With much Love and Prayers !   

Randy was the true essence of a gentle giant. He and Marilyn warmly welcomed my husband Melvin and I into their home to pour Godly wisdom into our hearts and lives as we attempted to "Master Money In Marriage" and we are STILL working on it. Thank you for always being a light to us, sharing God's truth even when it was sometimes hard, and being a living example of what it means to love your wife like Christ loves the church. We will deeply miss you sir.  And I am certain you have already heard the words we all want to hear from our Savior someday: Well done, my good and faithful servant!

God must have needed a good coach...and, so, He called Randy!! He ran a good race and influenced many with the skills that he was given ...we’ve all been blessed by knowing him !!

I am so richly blessed to have known Randy.  We had the joy of attending a mens bible study each week (7:05).When he spoke at our meetings he always had a biblical insight that was beneficial to our growth.  He loved his family dearly, but always with that gentle smile when talking about his love relationship with Jehovah GOD....We will miss him.

To Randy's family, so sorry to hear about cousin Randy, he will be missed a lot. His dad and mine played a lot of ball together.

I remember when we met, You, Randy and I. We hit it off! Our hearts had the same passion and Purpose to be Jesus to those around us. 

Then I took out a multi colored pen to write something down. He reached into his pocket and took out his multi colored pen. We rejoiced, because great minds think alike!😆

Sending prayers of love and support to the family. Randy will always be remembered as a warm and genuine soul. He was the epitome of a gentleman and will be missed.


Randy was my favorite cousin growing up, as we played a lot together whenever our families would get together.  Also I lived in town and he lived in the country on a farm, and in the summer I would visit him for a night or two, and during the day we would play outdoors together enacting all kinds of scenarios such as army or Tarzan.  We had such fun playing together!  When we were adults, I became closer to him after he received Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior.  After that, we were not only first cousins, but also Christian brothers in the Lord.

Will always remember the seven Peters’ cousins with the families gathering on Sundays at Grandma Hannah’s house after church for family dinner. Sports always on the TV and cousins playing.  Randy was the oldest cousin and I always looked up to him. I will miss phone calls with him and talks about the family.  Loved you, my cousin.   Toni
