

Alice Marie Dwyer Dowie, 72, of Clinton, Ct. died peacefully on Feb 23rd, 2011 at Yale New Haven Hospital. Raised in Madison, she relocated to Clinton upon marriage. She was born August 26, 1938 to Grace Gorman and W. Robert Dwyer in New Haven, Ct., she was a 1956 graduate of St Mary’s High School in New Haven and a 1960 graduate of St. Joseph’s College in West Hartford, Ct. Upon college graduation, Alice began her teaching career. She was one of the initial nine teachers at the newly constructed Jared Eliot Middle School in Clinton. She later taught until retirement in the East Lyme public schools, first in the elementary gifted program and later as a fourth and fifth grade teacher at Niantic Center School. She is survived by loving husband of 47 years, Thomas J. Dowie; children Ann Margaret Sullivan and husband Edward of Guilford, Ct., Michael Dowie and wife Kimberly of Essex, Ct. , Meghan Elizabeth Mayberry and husband Matthew of Chesapeake, Va. and Sarah Grace Dowie of Essex, Ct.; sister Mary Ellen Moran and husband Brian of Wilmington, N. Carolina, brother Dr Robert Dwyer and wife Linda of Essex, Ct, brother Paul Dwyer and wife Anne of Monroe, Ct.; grandchildren: Margaret Ann Sullivan, Brigid Alanna Sullivan (Guilford, Ct), Christopher Porter Dowie, Kyle Thomas Dowie, Andrew Michael Dowie(Essex, Ct),Michayla Grace Mayberry, Joshua Reed Mayberry, Courtney Marie Mayberry (Chesapeake, Va.),Benjamin Aaron Weinstein, Jessica Ann Weinstein, (Essex, Ct). Family will receive friends from 4 to 8 PM Monday, February 28 at the Swan Funeral Home, 80 E. Main St., Clinton.
