

Barbara Barrett Fontaine, 87 of Westbrook, died peacefully on Wednesday, June 26, 2013. Barbara was born to the late James and Helen (Touchette) Barrett on August 12, 1926 in New London, CT. As her father was an officer in the U.S. Coast Guard, Barbara spent her early years not only in CT, but also in Erie, PA, Port Arthur, TX, and New Orleans, LA. After her father passed in 1945 her family returned to New London, where she continued her education. While working as a secretary for AT&T in New London she went on a blind date and met the love of her life. Barbara and Raymond Fontaine were married in 1951 and celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary in May.
A resident of Westbrook since 1958, Barbara retired as a bookkeeper from Pettipaug Manor after 20 years. In retirement Barbara worked in the office of the Westbrook Ambulance Association, an organization that she loved and in which she made many friends. An avid gardener, particularly of roses, Barbara loved being outside in nature.
She is survived by her husband Raymond Fontaine; daughter and granddaughter Lynn and Abigail Fontaine; son and daughter-in-law Paul and Carla Fontaine; sisters-in-law Joan Barrett and Faye Barrett; many nieces and nephews; and grand dogs Tucker and Buddy. She will also be missed by her lifelong friends Nancy Lagasse and Betty Jane Cosenza. She was predeceased by her brothers James Morgan Barrett of North Carolina and Larry Touchette Barrett of Mississippi.
