Charles F. Torrey

Charles Fletcher “Bud” Torrey died peacefully on April 3rd after a short illness. He was 90 years young. He was a loving father, devoted husband, doting grandfather and loyal friend. He was born on March 15, 1924, in Kittery Point, Maine. He was the only child of Frank Elmer Torrey and Gladys Harrison Torrey. He proudly served on the USS Cates DE763 during World War II following his graduation from Revere (MA) High School.

He graduated from the University of Bridgeport in 1952. His friendships with his Alpha Gamma Phi brothers were life-long. He spent most of his career as a chemist at Chesebrough Pond’s.

Bud was passionate about sports as a player and a fan. As he got older, he reluctantly gave up baseball and took up bowling and golf. He and his wife Joan spent many enjoyable years perfecting their games together. He avidly followed the Red Sox and UCONN women’s basketball and reveled in their successes.

Throughout his life, he generously shared his enthusiasm for baseball and mathematics with many young people as an informal coach and tutor. He was an avid student of American history and enjoyed researching genealogy with his cousin Dinah.

His first wife Betty Jane precedes him in death. His wife Joan Smith-Torrey and his children Susan Beth Torrey, her husband James John Riviello, Torrey Harrison, Lisa Torrey-Roderick and her husband Jonathan Roderick, survive him. Steven Torrey joined Bud’s family as a teenager and took his name as a young adult. Bud had five grandchildren Elizabeth Torrey Riviello, Peter James Riviello, Hannah Elizabeth Roderick, Ian Michael Roderick, Megan Torrey Payne and her husband Jason; and his great grandson Beck Charles Payne.
