Doris was a member of my family and during my shildhoood I saw her with Vincent Guilloton whom was the uncle of my father. We visited her always with pleasure un NYC. I remeber her all my life for her kindness and her culture. My daughter was very impressed about her and loved her very strongly.

In 1971 I began my master's in the NYU German Department.  I was a fresh young thing from the Midwest, a bit overwhelmed but also excited about my new life in New York City.  Doris was so warm and helpful to me, though I didn't take a course from her until about a year later.  She encouraged me to include my husband and one of his colleague's to sing Lieder for my presentation for her class on Romanticism.  Almost 50 years later I can still remember the atmosphere in that classroom with Doris as our guide through the great poets of the 19th century. Later I became the assistant to the director of Deutsches Haus and always enjoyed conversations with Doris in that charming location.  What a positive and happy person she was!


It is with great sadness I hear this news.  Doris was not only a shining light to her family but to all her students who were lucky and grateful for her goodness, knowledge, and love for teaching. She was the best!!!

I was a student at New York University, where I received both my M.A in English and Ph.D in Comparative Literature (1981), and Professor Doris Guilloton was my doctoral advisor.  I enjoyed immensely both the  Faust Legend and European Romanticism , taught by Professor Guilloton.  I am saddened to hear of her passing.

I lived in San Francisco, California and taught at City College of San Francisco, but at that time, many jobs were part time and short term. I eventually worked in administration at Stanford University and worked in administration at  Howard Hughes Medical Institute on the Stanford campus, where I served in those roles for 27 years.

Professor Guilloton advised me, taught me, mentored me, and even suggested to me to send my doctoral dissertation to Peter Lang Publishing in New York, where it was published as a book entitled: European Romanticism: Literary Societies, Poets, and Poetry.

I will fondly remember Professor Guilloton’s warmth , grace, energy, acumen.

Doris graced my life at NYU during the 1980s.   At once companion and colleague, from the most exciting theater to the most obscure sixteenth-century German, Doris and I shared what turned out to be some of the best moments I have ever experienced.  She became an enduring part of me.  I will always miss her warmth, energy, insight, and unfailing good spirits.  

Doris Guilloton was a lovely, elegant, smart colleague on whom I relied for insights and intelligence when none seemed available. She was loyal, a scholar and person of greatest integrity and poise. We shared the same trainer, who supported her rigorous regimen and remarkably outstanding shape. Professor Guilloton compelled admiration on so many levels. I often spoke to her in German or French on a wide range of subjects. I shall miss my exquisite interlocutor dearly.

Doris was one those outstanding personalities one never forgets.  She was a radiant  presence wherever she went....made everyone feel happy, positive and validated.  If we could just plant a Doris Guilloton in every little group in the world,  everyone would be happier, more optimistic, more productive and would feel much better about themselves.  As one of the administrators in the German Department at NYU a lot of the positive warm atmosphere  in that happy work environment can be traced back to Doris.   Thank you Doris for your wonderful leadership, and for showing us all how to treat one another!!!   You will be missed!
