Doris Sandstrom Sanstrom

Doris Sandstrom Sanstrom, 92, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 17, 2020. She was born November 4, 1927 in West Hartford, Connecticut. She married the late Rudolph “Butch” Mitchell Sanstrom in 1951 and delighted in telling the story of her maiden name being one letter different than her married name. She owned property and resided on Boston Post Road in Westbrook, Connecticut since the early 1950s. She is survived by her three children: Judy Jackson and her husband Richard E. Jackson of Charlestown, Rhode Island and Naples, Florida; Walter “Sandy” Sanstrom and his wife Claire Sanstrom of Essex, Connecticut; and Sherry Johnson and her husband Gunnar Johnson of Westbrook, Connecticut, as well as four grandchildren: Christine Von Nickel, Stephen Jackson, Jason Sanstrom and Kaitlyn Deluca and two great-grandchildren. Her two sisters, June Hagadorn and Ellen Jones, and numerous nieces and nephews also survive her. She was the daughter of the late Walter A. Sandstrom and Ellen (Thorstenson) Sandstrom. After graduating from Hall High School in West Hartford in 1945, she attended business school and worked for an engineering firm, book store and as the head of children’s education at the First Church West Hartford, Christ Congregational. She was then office manager for her husband’s plumbing and electrical contracting business in Westbrook for many years. In the 1980s, she became an award-winning licensed real estate agent. After retiring, she was an office volunteer for Westbrook Ambulance and worked on local committees for wetlands preservation and 9 Town Transit, providing bus service for Connecticut shoreline towns. She was also the president of a wives of World War II submarine veterans group and an award-winning member of the New Haven Camera Club. Her greatest joys included travel, photography but mostly being surrounded by her family at numerous large parties over the years.
