OBITUARY
Dudley H. Woodbridge
June 3, 1928 – March 22, 2014
Dudley H. Woodbridge, 85, of Clinton, CT, and formerly of Morristown, NJ, passed away peacefully on March 22, 2014 following a short illness.
He was an only child born on June 3, 1928 in Rochester, MN, to the late Dr. Philip D. Woodbridge and Marion C. Maercklein Woodbridge.
Mr. Woodbridge received his bachelor’s degree at Swarthmore College, and a Masters in Urban Planning at MIT. In January of 1955 he started work at the Morris County Planning Board in New Jersey as a Junior Planner. By January 1962 he had advanced to the position of Planning Director and continued to work for the County until his retirement in 1992. During his working years he was appointed to the Morris County Board of Transportation where he continued to serve until October of 2012.
Mr. Woodbridge loved to explore the history and development of the automobile and road design, which fueled his civic and professional involvement in promoting public transportation.
Mr. Woodbridge also had a passion for classical music. He was an amateur chorus member. He met his wife while a member of the MIT chorus. They have sung together in various choruses for 60 years, at Carnegie Hall as well as various locations in Europe.
He has lived the last few years with his wife and four generations of family in his daughter’s house in Clinton. He enjoyed the bustle and liveliness that surrounded him. Mr. Woodbridge’s family had a summer home in Clinton from 1930 until the early 1970’s, so he was right at home in Clinton.
He is survived by his beloved wife of sixty years, Alice “Genie” Woodbridge; his children Charles Alan Woodbridge and his longtime companion Sharon Coleman of Niantic, Grace “Betty” Langley of Clinton, and Stephen D Woodbridge of Greenfield, MA: five grandchildren and several great grandchildren. His son-in-law Timothy D. Langley predeceased him.
A calling hour will be held on Saturday March 29th at 11:00 AM at Swan Funeral Home, 80 E. Main St., Clinton, CT, followed by a memorial service at the funeral home. To sign the online guest book, visit www.swanfh.com.

To the family of Dudley Woodbridge:
I was so stunned to learn of Dudley's passing. What a great and subtle man--always a gentlman-- with his wry and sophisticated humor. His keen and intelligent eyes rested on you and looked deeply into your very soul. My Dad and I spent many pleasurable hours in the company of Dudley and Genie--appreciatinig the finer things of life like music, theatre, good food and adventurous travel. One weekend, I spent with them in their Massachusetts house, I was treated to a visit to a butterfly farm. I shall always treasure the vision of the butterflies hovering around Dudley and landing ever so softly on his summer shirt.Creatures such as these can sense a kind and gentle man, and friend to the universe..

My deepest sympathy to the Woodbridge family.
Dudley hired me in 198i, a housewife returning to the job market. He was a kind and generous boss, allowing me to grow and develop a career path. I have fond memories of life at the Morris County Planning Board and the stewardship of Planning Director Woodbridge.

Thank you for choosing me. I have had an incredible life where I was loved everyday. You are the kindest, gentlest man there is, yet the strongest man I know. I will cherish the time I have had with you and mom these past few years. I will take good care of mom for you now that you are gone. I will miss you with all my heart daddy.
