Born April 3, 1953 in Hartford, CT to Oscar Auer and the late Vivian Engstrom Auer, Eric was a lifelong resident of Killingworth. His family will always be grateful that his many contributions to the Killingworth community were recognized long before his illness. He was inducted into the Haddam-Killingworth Hall of Fame in 2013 and honored as the 2014 Citizen of the Year by the Killingworth Lions Club. He was a founding member of the Killingworth Chamber of Commerce and served as a member of the Killingworth Foundation Board of Directors since its inception. He headed the Foundation’s Scholarship Committee and started the Vivian Engstrom Auer Family Fund in memory of his mother to support projects benefiting young people in the Killingworth community. He served the town of Killingworth across three decades on the Zoning Board of Appeals and the Inland Wetlands and Watercourse Commission. He devoted countless hours to volunteer efforts including the revival of the Killingworth Town Picnic, the creation of the Killingworth Community Gardens at Parmalee Farm, the all-volunteer effort to build the Bethke Practice Field and the successful completion of the Killingworth Recreation Park complex.
He is survived by his wife, Evelyn, his three children, Vivian Jane, Eric William and Sarah Mary all of Killingworth and his father Oscar Auer of Litchfield, CT; his five brothers and sisters- Arthur (Elizabeth) Auer of Lyndeborough, New Hampshire; Frederick Auer of Durham, Connecticut; Leslie Auer (Richard) Anderson of Simsbury, Connecticut; Karl (Janice) Auer of Killingworth and Linnea Auer Moore of Litchfield, Connecticut as well as his ten much loved nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law Mary Beth Barnum of Branford, Connecticut and Sally Jane Siegler (David) of Atlanta, Georgia.
Services are scheduled for 11 am on Friday, March 17th at the Killingworth Congregational Church, Route 81, Killingworth. Burial will be private at the Evergreen Cemetery in Killingworth. Memorial donations may be made online to the Closer to Free Fund at Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale or to the Connecticut Hospice, 100 Double Beach Road, Branford, CT.
