September 15, 1966 - June 9, 2026
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of John Andres Guelke, who passed away peacefully on June 9, 2026, at 10:55 a.m. in New Haven, CT, surrounded by the love of his family.
Born on September 15, 1966, in San Diego, California, John spent most of his childhood in the small desert community of Borrego Springs in Southern California, a place that always held a special place in his heart. As a young man, he enlisted in the United States Navy and was stationed on the East Coast, eventually calling Newport, Rhode Island, his new home. Although his military service was cut short due to an injury, the values of loyalty, courage, and service remained with him throughout his life.
Following his military service, John worked as a furniture repair technician, traveling throughout New England. He took great pride in his work and was known for his strong work ethic, craftsmanship, and positive attitude. Of all the places he went, the experiences he had, and the accomplishments he achieved throughout his life, the role he took the greatest pride in was being a father. His daughter was the center of his world. He put her first in all things, never hesitating to set aside his own needs to ensure she was cared for, supported, encouraged, and above all, loved deeply.
At just 38 years old, John was diagnosed with Carcinoid Syndrome, beginning a long and courageous battle with a rare cancer that created numerous other health challenges. His life was forever changed by a difficult battle that brought countless doctor appointments, chemotherapy treatments, procedures, surgeries, and many ups and downs. Yet through every setback, he met each challenge with remarkable courage, unwavering determination, and grace. His strength and perseverance were an inspiration to all who knew and loved him.
Those fortunate enough to know John will remember his infectious personality, generous spirit, and willingness to always go the extra mile for others. He was funny, warm, and full of life, with a gift for making people feel welcomed and valued, whether they were lifelong friends or new acquaintances. John was a “life first” kind of person, someone who believed in putting family, fun, laughter, and meaningful moments at the center of everything. He loved bringing joy to others, sharing a good laugh, going to concerts and cheering on his beloved San Diego Chargers.
John also had a passion for the game of soccer. Many remember him as a young, talented player known for his great technical skills on the field. One of his greatest joys was passing along his love of the game to his daughter, who took on much of his talent, creating many memories and special moments that will be cherished.
He is lovingly remembered by his beloved daughter, Kristen Guelke, and her husband, Richard Cianci; Robin Morris, Kristen’s mother, who shared in the love and joy of raising Kristen; his loving parents, Valerie Guelke and John Guelke; his sister, Tiffany Guelke; his brother, Christian Guelke, and sister-in-law, Jessica Guelke; his nieces, Gretchen Guelke and Leisl Guelke; his nephews, Jonathan Haravos and Benjamin Haravos; and countless extended family members, dear friends, and loved ones whose lives were touched by his special soul.
While his passing leaves an immeasurable void, his legacy of kindness, humor, generosity, resilience, and love will continue to live on through all who were blessed to know him.
May he rest in peace, knowing he was deeply loved and will never be forgotten.
