Joseph F. Zygmont, affectionately known as “Jay,” passed away peacefully at his home in Killingworth, CT on Sunday, July 6, 2025, at the age of 83. Born on June 23, 1942, in Greenwich, Connecticut, he was the beloved son of the late Joseph F. Zygmont Sr. and Mary Bridget (Hogan) Zygmont, and stepson of the late Marie (Pascual) Zygmont.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Victoria Zygmont; his sister Hedwig Sarofin and her husband Joseph; his brother David Zygmont. Jay leaves behind his loving sons, Jeffrey Zygmont and his wife Joanna, and Peter Zygmont; as well as his cherished stepchildren: Alyson Roberts and her husband Larry, Jennifer Konin, Scot Smith, and Amy Duhig and her husband Alan. He was a proud grandfather to William Zygmont, Molly Zygmont, Kelsey Duhig, Patrick Roberts, Kyle Roberts and Kathryn Konin.
A graduate of The Morgan School (Class of 1961), Jay went on to earn a double major in Chemistry and Microbiology from South Dakota State University (Class of 1965). He served his country with distinction in the U.S. Army’s 1st Air Cavalry Division, training in Germany and seeing active duty in Vietnam from February 1968 to April 1969. He was honorably discharged in 1972.
Following his military service, Jay enjoyed a long and successful career as a research chemist with Chesebrough-Ponds (now Unilever), where he contributed to multiple patents in the personal care industry. He also founded and operated his own tax preparation business, Accu-Tax, which he maintained through the present day.
In retirement, Jay embraced life traveling the world far and wide, indulging in fine dining, and spending countless joyful hours on the golf course. He split his time between Fox Hopyard Golf Club in Connecticut and Wachesaw Plantation Club in Murrells Inlet, South Carolina. A passionate genealogist, he traced his family’s roots back generations, even visiting ancestral sites in Ireland and reconnecting with distant relatives in Poland.
Jay was also an avid fan of Red Sox baseball and UConn women’s basketball, and he treasured quiet walks at Chatfield Hollow with his beloved wife, Vicki.
Calling hours will be held on Friday, July 11th, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at Swan Funeral Home, 80 E Main St, Clinton, CT 06413. Burial Saturday July 12th 10 AM Evergreen Cemetery Killingworth, CT.
