Lawrence James "Sonny" "Slick" Cook, of Clinton, passed away peacefully while surrounded by loved ones, on November 16, 2017 at Connecticut Hospice, Branford. He was born on July 22, 1939, in Attleboro, MA to the late Charles Eaton Cook and Orla Mackay Cook.
Larry graduated from Castleton College and completed his Master’s degree from Southern Connecticut State University. He was a teacher in Regional School District 17 for 34 years. He was honored twice as a teacher of distinction in Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers. Larry retired in 2004 and occasionally substituted in the district.
Larry was the widower of Patricia Cook, to whom he had been married for nearly 50 years. They will be remembered fondly as a couple who shared the gift of continuous humor, always laughing with each other and those they loved.
He enjoyed traveling, the company of friends, walking on the sandbars at Clinton Beach, and going to the movies. Being Papa to his grandchildren Abby and Austin was a highlight of his life. He was eager to hear about their school experiences and encouraged them to get good grades.
Larry will be profoundly missed and is survived by his daughter Julia Cook and son David Cook, of Clinton; sisters Doreen Cheney of Clinton and Irene Tremblay of N. Attleboro, MA; grandchildren Abby and Austin Cook of Enfield; nieces and nephews Jeff Cheney of CA, Cindy Hennessey (John) of Clinton; Gretchen Cheney of PA, and Kevin Tremblay of IL.
Calling hours will be held on Monday, November 27th from 4-8pm at Swan Funeral Home, 80 E. Main St., Clinton. A celebration of his life will be held on Tuesday, November 28th at 10am at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation to Alzheimer’s Association would be appreciated.
