Walter J. Lewis, Jr. (80), peacefully departed this life, leaving behind a legacy of deep love for his family and a lasting mark on the shoreline town of Clinton, Connecticut. Born on November 13, 1945, he was the son of the late Helen (Lewis) Carrier and Walter J. Lewis. He is predeceased by his first love and wife, Grace Cammarata Lewis, stepfather, Larry Carrier, and sister Paula DeLorenze. Walter was the oldest of 5 children leaving behind one sister, Rene Voelkel of Westbrook, CT.
Walter is survived by his loving wife, Carol Lewis. He is the devoted father to Robin French (Tim), Lisa Corrone (Jeff), Walter J. Lewis III (Debbie), Richard Lewis (Tara), and Christopher Lewis. He was the most loving grandfather to his 11 grandchildren: Jamie (Jordon), Jake, Grace, Angelica, Richie, Walter, Desiree, Hannah, Hunter, Taylor, and Addison. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and the community he helped build. Walter will be remembered by his grandchildren as the grandpa who gave them everything they asked for including a dog, Ace, who became his constant companion. He would hide money in his grandchildren's cars for them to find later and give them whatever type of candy or ice cream they desired. He instilled the need to have faith, be kind, and to be grateful for all that God has given them. Random cards being sent and newspaper clippings that he needed to share with friends and family were a staple in his daily life. He will be remembered for calling all of his children every day to just say Hi and to catch up on their lives. He needed confirmation that his children were safe. The daily call is what they miss most of all.
Walter’s journey began at Vinal Technical High School in Middletown, where he discovered his passion and trade in the construction world. He quickly mastered the skills of framing and constructing houses and structures, including working on the Old Saybrook High School project. It was during that specific job that Walter realized he wanted to be the leader of his own company. Fueled by that ambition, he founded F & K Construction Company, with F & K standing for "Framing King."
He soon became a staple in Clinton, CT, where he chose to raise his family and grow his love for building. Walter framed houses for many subdivisions across town, leaving his craftsmanship on Victoria Manor, Christopher Lane, and numerous homes including remodeling two historic homes on the Clinton Town Green. His projects expanded throughout the shoreline including Ferndale Condominiums and Banner Lodge & Country Club. His greatest masterpiece, however, was his beloved "Castle" on Shore Road. With the help of architect and friend Dave Travers, Walter proudly built a literal castle on the beach for his children. As his projects grew, so did his business; he later established Legend Builders where he continued to shape the local landscape of the shoreline.
Besides working, which he loved doing, Walter’s favorite pastimes were watching football on Sundays, taking drives with as many family members he could round up, attending any grandchild’s activities, holidays, boating, traveling, reading, and golfing. Cedar Island was one of his favorite places to gather in the summertime. Through the years Walter was a member of the Clinton Rotary, a Mason, and a member of Westbrook Elks Lodge 1784.
Known for his immense kindness, Walter always gave generously to those in need. But above all his professional achievements and kindness to those he met, Walter loved his family unconditionally. He always put them above all else and was their ultimate provider and protector. His children are proud to say that he was the best father anyone could ask for and are grateful for all that he taught them.
