
Born February 13, 1927, in Smith County, she was the daughter of the late Newman C. McAlpin and Olice McCallum McAlpin. Mrs. Valentine was preceded in death by her first husband, Holbert Hughes, her first-born son Jimmy Hughes, and her second husband, the Reverend S. W. Valentine.
A home-maker and employee of the Public Employees Retirement System of Mississippi, upon her second marriage, she devoted full time to ministry as a preacher’s wife. Although Reverend Valentine had retired from the full-time pastorate, having served many years at Southside Baptist Church and Calvary Baptist Church in Jackson, the Valentines served in several other churches, including Calvary Baptist Church in Anchorage, Alaska, a special time for them both.
Survivors include her son and his wife, Charles and Jan Hughes of Raymond; step-son and his wife Sam and Karen Valentine of Carthage; daughter-in-law Debbie Hughes of Clinton; sisters Betty Dye of Clinton and Carolyn Neely of Cumming, Georgia and one brother, Mike McAlpin of Magee. Mrs. Valentine also is survived by seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren as well as many other relatives of McAlpin Family.
Visitation will be on Wednesday February 20, 2013 at Wright and Ferguson in Clinton from 4:00pm to 7:00pm. Services will be on Thursday February 21, 2013 at 10:00am with a one hour visitation before. Burial will be at First Baptist Church Cemetery in Polkville, MS. Pallbearers are Daniel Hughes, James Applewhite, II, John Applewhite, Kristopher Upchurch, Victor Cook and Bret Birdwell
