
Dr. Frank I. Lovell, Jr. passed away at his home on Sunday morning, April 22, 2012. He was born in 1927 to Frank Lovell, Sr, and Katie Adeline Lemley. He was the middle child of nine and survived all of his siblings. After serving his country in the Navy during World War II, Dr. Lovell attended Holmes Junior College and then the University of Mississippi. Dr. Lovell had a passion for education. He served as a teacher, was elected county superintendent of education for Carroll County, and served as principal in several school districts, including Clarksdale, Hazelhurst, and Okolona. Dr. Lovell then taught future educators as professor at the Mississippi State College for Women. He obtained his doctorate of education from Ole Miss prior to becoming Assistant State Superintendent of Education. He retired from his distinguished educational career while serving the State Department of Education as Executive Secretary for the School Finance Commission. Additionally, Dr. Lovell was a proud member of the Carrollton Masonic Lodge for over fifty years. He and his wife were members of First Baptist Church in Clinton, Mississippi.
His wife, Peggy Jean, and his infant daughter, Phyllis Jean, preceded him in death. His son, Frank Lovell, III, and wife Debra, as well as son Thomas Ferguson Lovell survive him. He has two grandchildren, Frank Lovell, IV of Rogers, AR, married to Vanessa; and Margie Jeanann of Brandon, MS, married to Bradley Suggs. He was most proud of his three great-grandchildren, Frank “Quinn” Lovell, V, Jacob Royal Suggs, and Katie Adeline Suggs, each of whom he claimed, “looked just like him.”
Graveside services will be held at 2:30 PM Tuesday April 24, 2012 in the New Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery in Carrollton, MS. Visitation will be between the hours of 10AM and 12 Noon at Wright and Ferguson Funeral Home in Clinton.
