Born on November 22, 1920, in Susa, Italy, Carlo’s life was a testament to perseverance and dedication. Carlo lived the first part of his life in Italy, and spent his early adult years engaged in the hardships of World War II serving in the Italian military in North Africa. He narrowly escaped death by a dream of the Virgin Mary that included his mother telling him to run away from a trench he was sleeping within during an air raid. Immediately afterward a bomb fell to the center of that same trench. The experience shaped his faith for the rest of his life. He eventually was taken into United States custody as a prisoner of war and brought to the United States where he began working in Detroit, Michigan at the State Fair Grounds as an ally. Though his family in Italy initially feared the worst that he had been killed in the war, it was during that time that he found hope for his future as he met a woman in Detroit with the same last name but not a relation and had lived just a few miles from his home. After the war they began corresponding by letters and he wed, Ada in Susa, Italy in 1947 and eventually made Detroit, Michigan, their home. Carlo was a devoted man of faith and a longtime member of Saint Michael’s Catholic Community in Sterling Heights after moving to Clinton Township in 1984. He dedicated 30 years of service as an electrician in the Detroit auto industry, working for Chrysler. Though he spent most of his life in the United States, he never forgot his roots, returning to Italy 19 times to visit his beloved family. A man of many passions, Carlo found joy in gardening, cooking, home maintenance, engaging in word search puzzles and spending time with his family. Despite his age, he embraced technology, staying connected with his family in Italy through emails. His independence and strong spirit remained evident throughout his remarkable 104 years. Carlo’s life was defined by love, perseverance, and a deep connection to his faith and family. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
Carlo is survived by his son, Dennis Favro, and daughter Arlene Markowski (Daniel), as well as many nieces and nephews and extended family in Italy. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ada in 2006.
Services will be held on Monday, March 10, 2025. A brief in-state gathering will begin at 9 AM and go until the time of a funeral mass at 9:30 AM at St. Michael Catholic Community, 40501 Hayes Road, Sterling Heights, Michigan 48313.
