Daniel Smolarek, a longtime resident of Clinton and Macomb Township, and more recently of Sterling Heights, passed away peacefully at his home on September 14, 2026, following a long illness. He was 86 years old.
Daniel was raised in Hamtramck and was a graduate of Wilbur Wright High School. From an early age, he had an interest in radios and photography. He attended Specs Howard School of Broadcasting and went on to work as a camera operator for Channel 56 Public Broadcasting (PBS). He later began training for what would become his long-term career as an electrician with Chrysler, from which he retired approximately 25 years ago.
In his younger years, Daniel enjoyed playing drums in a band. He was a simple, humble man who found joy in the things he loved and the people around him. Above all, Daniel was a man of strong Christian faith. He was a devoted member of the Lakeside Bible Chapel, where he willingly volunteered his time in many ways, including helping with the church’s food bank and winter clothing drives.
Daniel had a generous heart and was always willing to help others. He faithfully supported the church’s missionaries and quietly assisted those within his church family who needed financial help. His generosity was an expression of his faith and his genuine concern for others.
A hardworking man throughout his life, Daniel took pride in providing for his family and being a supportive father. He was also committed to serving his community and volunteered his time at the Clinton Township Library.
Daniel will be remembered for his strong faith, generous spirit, quiet nature, work ethic, and devotion to his family and church.
Daniel is survived by his loving children, Kimberly Hornberger and Gregory (Wendy) Smolarek; grandchildren, Justin (Sarah) Smolarek, Jenna (Zac) Burns, Nicholas (Sarah) Hornberger, and Jessica Smolarek; and great-grandchildren, Leo Smolarek, Kepa Smolarek, and Barrett Burns. He will also be fondly remembered by his siblings Sandra (Paul Simms) Ugo, Mary Jo Smolarek, and Danette (Alan) Gurzell, as well as many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
Daniel is preceded in death by his parents, Walton and Genevieve Smolarek; his son-in-law, Donald Hornberger; and his brother, Michael Smolarek.
