Gary Adrian Chapman

Gary A. Chapman was born on December 18, 1940, in Flint, Michigan to his proud parents William Carl Chapman and Janice Agnes Chapman. Gary Chapman passed away peacefully on September 17, 2026, at the age of 85, surrounded by the love of a family whose lives were forever shaped by his kindness, generosity, love and devotion.

Gary grew up in and spent his entire life in Michigan, where he built a life centered around family, hard work, and taking care of the people he loved. He was a kind, loving, and giving man with a huge heart and the best of intentions. Those who knew Gary knew that he never went a day without thinking about or worrying about the people he loved. He worked hard throughout his life and always made sure his family had what they needed.

Gary proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps from 1960 to 1964, attaining the rank of Corporal (E-4). He was stationed at Camp Pendleton in California where he served as an Infantry Weapons Repairman and Armorer. During his military service, Gary was awarded a Good Conduct Medal, and he also earned an Expert Badge, M14 - The highest of three qualification levels: Marksman, Sharpshooter, and Expert.

Following his military service, Gary began his career as a carpenter in the mid 60’s. In the 80’s after the housing boom slowed in Michigan, he worked various construction jobs including repair work on the Pontiac Silverdome roof after it collapsed from heavy snow, form work at Chrysler World Headquarters in Auburn Hills, and odd jobs on the Ambassador Bridge before his strong work ethic and mechanical abilities eventually led him to the automotive industry in the late 90’s, where he worked as a Gear Development Specialist at Ford Sterling Axle Plant for Ford Motor Company before retiring in 2004.

In 1964, Gary married his wife, Sandy. Together they built a family and shared 40 years of marriage until Sandy's passing in 2004 at the age of 60. In the years that followed, Gary was very fortunate to find companionship and love again on Match.com with his partner, Libby Zelenak. Gary and Libby shared a beautiful 20 years together.

Gary was the proud father of Mark Chapman of Ferndale; Scott Chapman (Belinda) of Macomb; and Shannon Cargile (David) of Decatur, Alabama. Gary was also a proud grandfather to Shawn Golembiewski, James Chapman, Rebecah Chapman, Desirae Biondo, and Mikie Warrick.

He leaves behind his partner Libby Zelenak, Libby's daughters, Patti Weinand (David), Lynn Pazdziora (Gerry), and Nancy Profant (Rick); his extended family includes several grandchildren and great grandchildren along with the many friends and loved ones fortunate enough to have shared in his life.

Gary was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Sandy, brother Carl Chapman, and his sister Karen Sutton as well as his parents William Carl Chapman and Janice Agnes Chapman.

Being "Papa" extended well beyond Gary's own family. Over the years, he became Papa to many of the children who came through Sandy's daycare. It was simply part of who Gary was—he had room in his heart for people, and family was never limited to names on a family tree.

Gary loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was a member of the North Macomb and North Oakland Sportsmen's clubs where he enjoyed the friendships and memories that came along with those many years of membership. When he wasn't outdoors, there was a good chance Gary was following one of his favorite sports. He especially enjoyed NASCAR, football, and baseball. He spent several years as a leader within the Royal Oak Baseball Federation where he bonded with several families from all walks of life. Gary was also a CB and Ham Radio enthusiast in the 80’s and into the early 90’s, where he communicated with people all around the World. He had a passion for model airplanes and had a large collection of interests including – die cast cars, baseball cards, stamps, coins and tools. He also had a huge fascination with computers.

Above all else, Gary will be remembered for his heart. He was a hardworking provider, a devoted husband and partner, a loving father and Papa, and a loyal friend. He gave freely, cared deeply, and always wanted the people he loved to be okay. His concern for his family never stopped, because taking care of others was simply part of who he was.

In accordance with Gary's wishes, there will be no viewing or traditional funeral service. Gary will be laid to rest with military honors at Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly, Michigan at a later date.

Gary spent his life looking out for the people he loved. Though he will be deeply missed, the love he gave, the lessons he taught, and the memories he created will remain with his family and friends for generations to come.
