OBITUARY

James A. Mulrenin

May 25, 1937October 10, 2021

James Alexander Mulrenin, age 84, passed away on October 10, 2021, after a recent stroke. The eldest of six sons, James was born May 25, 1937, to John and Olive (Sangster) Mulrenin in Detroit, Michigan. He graduated from Annunciation High School in 1955 and Wayne State University in 1970 with his Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. James started his 40+ year career at Detroit Edison right out of high school. He held many positions, however, being an Overhead Lineman, always held a special place in his heart. He went on to become the General Director of Union Relations and ended his distinguished career as Director of Medical/Wellness. After his retirement from Edison, James went on to work in risk management where he completed 20 additional years. He was able to work with young linemen and watch over their safety, a job that meant so much to him.

James had an extreme passion for running. He ran in over 200 marathons, including 5 Boston Marathons, the New York Marathon, and over 20 Detroit Free Press Marathons. He was extremely proud of running multiple 50 mile races and even a 100 mile run that was definitely his crowning achievement. Most importantly, James was an avid lover of cookies and ice cream!

James belonged to the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers-Local 17, and the Utility Workers Union of America-Local 223. He was a member of the Engineering Society of Detroit, the Industrial Relations Research Association, and the Employers Association of Detroit. He belonged to the Edison Athletic Association, Road Runner’s Club of America, and The Dukes.

James is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 63 years, Dorrie (McMurray); Beloved father of Maureen (John) Smoke, Kathleen Duchnicki, Christine Mulrenin, and the late James. Proud Papa of Jack and Emily Smoke, Patrick, Brian and Kevin Duchnicki, Chelsea Mulrenin, Riley, and Kara Wolfbauer. Loving brother to Richard and Bob Mulrenin and the late John, Tom and Martin Mulrenin.

Remembering one of the most humble, humorous, and full of integrity persons that I have ever been blessed to know. He inspired more of us runners than he will know in more ways than one. All the miles ran with Jim may be forgotten by many of us, but not how good a man and friend he was. Rest In Peace, Jim, you will be missed.
