John attended St. Peter's Catholic School, Notre Dame High School, Marist Seminary in Framington Massachusetts, and Wayne State University. John served in the United States Army. He worked for Chatham Super Market in the accounting department, and then went on to work at and retire from the finance department at Chrysler. John enjoyed collecting and building model airplanes, boats, and tanks. He was a gifted Lego builder-something his grandchildren greatly appreciated. He also was a coin collector. John loved his family and most of all spending time with his beloved grandchildren , whom he referred to as his four troublemakers.
On August 24, 1974, John married Fran (Cooper) at St. Michael's Episcopal Church in Grosse Pointe Woods. Other survivors include their children, Michael (Debbie) Merlo, Megan (Rob) Steusloff; grandchildren, Michael Jr., Zachary, Lucas, Skylar; step-grandson, Gabe; brother, Paul (Pauline) Merlo; brother-in-laws Gary (the late Jan), Raymond (Rose), and John (Kim) Cooper; and many treasured cousins, nieces, and nephews.
A memorial service for John will be Saturday, August 14 at 11:00 am at Grace Episcopal Church, 115 South Main Street, Mt Clemens, MI 48043. Donations can be made in John's memory to Grace Episcopal Church or a veteran's organization of your choice.
