Joe lived a life centered around family, community, and the sports he loved. Deeply involved in school-age athletics for decades, he served as a referee, coach, and umpire—roles that came naturally to him given his lifelong passion for basketball, baseball, and golf. Though he lived for sports, those who knew Joe closely would say that golf was his favorite game for personal enjoyment and he had a long history of league bowling with his father, “Pa Joe”, his best friend, Chris Cassin, and others whose friendships he cherished throughout his lifetime, as well as many memorable golf trips to Palm Desert with his closest friends and his “bucket list” trip to Scotland to play at the Old Course – St. Andrews Links. Additionally, he played league basketball for many years with a large group of men that meant the world to him. Through these commitments, he touched countless lives, forming lasting bonds with the young athletes, parents, and volunteers whose paths crossed his.
His dedication to local sports extended into his work as the owner of Sterling Promotions, a sports promotional apparel business through which he supported numerous schools and teams. Joe was well known for helping outfit cheer squads, flag football teams, and many other youth programs, as well as assisting with fundraising events. His generosity, reliability, and community spirit made him a trusted and beloved figure across multiple athletic communities.
Joe deeply loved, respected and had great pride for Mitchell, Jake and JJ…he shared a special bond with each of them.
Outside of tending to his daily business, Joe dedicated the majority of his time attending ALL of JJ’s basketball and baseball games …he never missed a game whether it was here in Michigan or for travel ball in another state.
Joe cherished the time he spent with his son and namesake, Joseph John “JJ” Weimert IV, and with his nephew Christian Haraga—together, the three were “thick as thieves.” Watching his niece Shen, who is also his goddaughter, grow up brought him much joy.
He also enjoyed the steady companionship of his two rescue dogs, Oscar and Sophia, who were never far from his side.
He is survived by his loving wife, Sherry Weimert; his son, Joseph John Weimert IV; and his step-sons, Mitchell Lowry and Jake Lowry (Kristin Mazzola). He is also survived by his sisters, Ann Marie Haraga (Brian) and Wendy Weimert; his nephew, Christian Haraga, and his niece and goddaughter, Shen Haraga, along with many cousins, extended family members, and friends. Joseph was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph John Weimert II and Vitina Weimert, and baby sister Mary Lynn Weimert.
